Domain hosting

Morning all,
I am thinking of transferring my domain name to 123 reg - the reason being that regardless of my ISP my email will always be forwarded to one company rather than changing the IPS Tag constantly. I will then set up my email client to access 123 reg.
Is this logical thinking or have I misunderstood how domain name/email forwarding works?
Appreciate your thoughts on this.
Dave

Re: Domain hosting

If you are only using 123 reg as your registrar then you will only have email forwarding. With email forwarding you will leave your email client settings the same as you will forward all emails from user@domain.co.uk to user@user.plus.co.uk. If and when you change ISP then you will change the forwarding address and change the email client. Email forwarding is normally provided free of charge.
if you went to retrieve email from 123 reg, which will require you to change your email client settings, then you have to subscribe to their email package.

Re: Domain hosting

Thanks itsme,
I have to admit I am still slightly confused.  Are you saying that it would be just as easy and more cost effective just to transfer my ips tag to the new ISP, bearing in mind I might be with them for at least 12 months.
It sounds that I am making a simple process slightly more complicated by involving 123 reg.

Re: Domain hosting

No I think you are doing the right thing. Having a domain name mean that your email address will not change when you change ISP. Also having 123 reg (or others that specialise in domain names) as the registrar is better as they are cheaper than ISPs, especially Plusnet. who charge £50+ compare to £6 for 2 years.
Hope this does not confuse you more but there are 2 elements with domains. There is the Registrar and Hosting. The Registrar is responsible for renewing the domain and controlling the nameservers. Hosting can be done by any 3rd party and the nameservers have to point to the 3rd party. Sorry to confuse you more but Hosting has 2 parts, these are DNS and Web Server. The nameserver point to the DNS and the Web server could be yet another company. Normally a Hosting company will supply the DNS and Web Server. Might be worth reading the FAQ http://www.123-support.co.uk/
I would suggest initially is just to use the email forwarding.

Re: Domain hosting

I agree -
I've had my own domains for years - and just forward email to the appropriate email name I have with the ISP.
A cautionary tale - some domain hosting companies say they will do it cheap - and if you then want to leave will charge you abou £16 to let you move away. I think this is the case with Freeola for example ?

Re: Domain hosting

£16, believe this could be the same as bank charges as unfair as it 's much higher than the true cost.

Re: Domain hosting

Ok just intiated the process.  I have requested PN transfer the domain to 123 reg.  Once this takes place (24 hours I believe) I presume I just log onto 123 control panel and make sure my domain name emails are forwarded to PN for me to collect via my email client.
Once I change ISP's it is simply a case of changing the 'forward to' email address in the 123 control panel to my new supplier (rather than transferring the ipstag) and then changing my email client details.
Please tell me I'm right!!!!!!!
And yes, itsme, you did a fine job of confusing the hell out of me  Wink

Yes that right.
If you are thinking about having a website hosted post back as this can be another can of worms with the different options available.

Re: Domain hosting

All set up now - just waiting for the DNS servers to catch up and my catch all forward email to start working (nail biting times - email is vital at the moment because I am in the process of changing jobs)
I do intend to host a website eventually but it is not a priority.
Thanks for your help - and any advice on web hosting would also be apprecaited.

Re: Domain hosting

Well yes - you seem to have done the right things.
Of course PN have their own web hosting http://www.payh.co.uk/
And there is the big boys like 1and1 - which are ok most of the time - but customer service can be a bit dire at times.
and 123 do hosting too. and hundreds of other firms - in UK and thousands in the USA and elsewhere.
It's been a long time since we discussed the best hosting companies - it all depends on what you want - do you use php, mySQL databases - do you want a xNIX server or a Microsoft one etc etc .
I would say use an Apache server on Linux, with php and mySQL
The PAYH is fine but maybe the user interface is not for the beginner - the 1and1 is more user friendly to be honest ( sorry Kev ! )

Re: Domain hosting

When I said it could be a can of worms it's depending whether the OP want to move email with the web hosting. As most hosting sites will take over the DNS which will mean the current email forwarding that has been set up will no longer work. I believe Google host sites without having control of the DNS.

Re: Domain hosting

I think for reasons of simplicity when I decide to create a webpage I will remain with 123.  I really am at the very begninning  of discovering the hows and wheres of this sort of thing.

"Our entire support team is based in the UK too."    Wink

Re: Domain hosting

123-reg is a part of GX Networks I am with 123-reg, it's user interface is not as good as it was.  it is not user friendly for Dyslexics any more, it was before!
But I am sticking with them!
