I am thinking of transferring my domain name to 123 reg - the reason being that regardless of my ISP my email will always be forwarded to one company rather than changing the IPS Tag constantly. I will then set up my email client to access 123 reg.
Is this logical thinking or have I misunderstood how domain name/email forwarding works?
Appreciate your thoughts on this.
Dave

if you went to retrieve email from 123 reg, which will require you to change your email client settings, then you have to subscribe to their email package.

I have to admit I am still slightly confused. Are you saying that it would be just as easy and more cost effective just to transfer my ips tag to the new ISP, bearing in mind I might be with them for at least 12 months.
It sounds that I am making a simple process slightly more complicated by involving 123 reg.

Hope this does not confuse you more but there are 2 elements with domains. There is the Registrar and Hosting. The Registrar is responsible for renewing the domain and controlling the nameservers. Hosting can be done by any 3rd party and the nameservers have to point to the 3rd party. Sorry to confuse you more but Hosting has 2 parts, these are DNS and Web Server. The nameserver point to the DNS and the Web server could be yet another company. Normally a Hosting company will supply the DNS and Web Server. Might be worth reading the FAQ http://www.123-support.co.uk/
I would suggest initially is just to use the email forwarding.

I've had my own domains for years - and just forward email to the appropriate email name I have with the ISP.
A cautionary tale - some domain hosting companies say they will do it cheap - and if you then want to leave will charge you abou £16 to let you move away. I think this is the case with Freeola for example ?

Once I change ISP's it is simply a case of changing the 'forward to' email address in the 123 control panel to my new supplier (rather than transferring the ipstag) and then changing my email client details.
Please tell me I'm right!!!!!!!
And yes, itsme, you did a fine job of confusing the hell out of me

Yes that right.
If you are thinking about having a website hosted post back as this can be another can of worms with the different options available.

I do intend to host a website eventually but it is not a priority.
Thanks for your help - and any advice on web hosting would also be apprecaited.

Of course PN have their own web hosting http://www.payh.co.uk/
And there is the big boys like 1and1 - which are ok most of the time - but customer service can be a bit dire at times.
and 123 do hosting too. and hundreds of other firms - in UK and thousands in the USA and elsewhere.
It's been a long time since we discussed the best hosting companies - it all depends on what you want - do you use php, mySQL databases - do you want a xNIX server or a Microsoft one etc etc .
I would say use an Apache server on Linux, with php and mySQL
The PAYH is fine but maybe the user interface is not for the beginner - the 1and1 is more user friendly to be honest ( sorry Kev ! )

and also they say
"Our entire support team is based in the UK too."
I presume this part of Pipex wasn't sold to Tiscalli and now CPW ?
