Does the Thomson Gateway TG585 v7 support 10/100M LAN by Realtek RTL8100C?
Just bought a base unit for my home server setup but can't seem to get the Thomson Gateway to see the device on the network.  All I can think of is that maybe the bios needs upgrading?  Anyone have any ideas whether the above setup is supported by the v7 bios or not?

Network hardware all speaks a common TCP/IP protocol, so I doubt it is a hardware issue. The first thing I would check is whether DHCP is enabled on both the router and the server. If they are both trying to assign IP addresses then they may have ended up on different subnets and won't see each other.

It won't let you serve to the internet and act as a client (in the normal way).

Works perfectly with an operating system installed so it isn't anything to do with the modem but no joy with a dedicated ubuntu server only.  Will have to find a workaround for this as it only has one pci slot and I need that for the scsi drives and card I am using so I can't use a different network card.  I have seen reports that this has happened to other ubuntu users but they were using dual boot and it seems that there was a method whereby the operating system was keeping the network 'alive' but I can't see how that could affect a dedicated server.  Could be they were using a different server setup.  By the looks of it I will have to read up a great deal on ubuntu and try and get it to communicate somehow or other.  I have a few other options open to me yet though so everything should work ok eventually!

Have you tried

(That eth0 parameter in the 3rd line may be different - see the result of the second line.)
You may want to try commandname -h where you don't recognise a command, to check that it's not destructive!

That looks promising.  Will try it later on as my server is up and running on the original computer.  I run my shops from it.  Will try it in the early hours of the morning as my site is pretty busy now.

Tried this last night and was pretty hopeful it would work but nope!
The 2nd line indicated that the network card was disabled?  The 3rd line couldn't find the program.  I tried eth1 as that was shown on the screen for the adaptor but that didn't work either.  I think the problem is with the disabled bit or Ubuntu just doesn't have the drivers for the controller or something.  Anything more I can try?

The network is now enabled but still not working.  Can't be much stopping this now?

I don't know how, but if you look in the Linux hardware database, RTL-81xx cards are widely reported to work.
Can't see a RTL-8100 report though.

Looks like plan b is next!  This plan means reinstalling ubuntu on my now main computer and then using it for my new server instead.  When I attempted to do this before the processor wasn't compatible with the ubuntu version I used on my original server - doh!  Means I have to reinstall the server and then transfer the data.  Still it is probably good practise and will help me to remember how I did it in the first place.  The new base unit is faster than my now main computer anyways so I won't lose out.  Amazing using your own home server and I want to keep the server very much alive.

Try a live CD first to see if it works
This would allow you to check out the network card etc
Suggest latest LTS version - 7.04 I think.
I thought Ubuntu works for any Intel/AMD processor!

Good idea, though I think I will install another scsi drive with a new array I think as I have lots of spare hard drives .  This will allow me an option of booting into windows should I need to at any point.  I don't think ubuntu has a problem with older lan setups.  I think the new lan chips have wake up call and all the rest of it thats causing problems. 
Ubuntu does work with any processor but you have to use the right version to begin with.  Even though my main computer is an amd 2400 ubuntu seems to see it as an i386 requiring a different kernel - or version - to run it.  Just won't boot.  I suppose my amd 2400 is old hat now but the system flies with 10,000 scsi hard drives and 2 GB of ram.  I have some 15,000 rpm scsi hard drives available now bought from ebay for around £20 each I think it was and in perfect nick too.  Unbelievable really when you consider how much these drives were new.

I've got an ancient [hardly ever used] PC circa 2001, 600MHz Intel, 384MByte
It has 3 x IDE (unused) + a single external 10K SCSI (Adaptec 29160) + wireless card
External box with power supply, disk, cable, 80-68 converter, LVD terminator courtesy of Ebay.
and it works with the full install on 7.04 - albeit rather slowly.
