Quote from: gleneagles Do Tablets such as Android and ipads use some version of linux or is it a specific type of software ?
Linux Kernel 3.0.31 on my Sister's Android fondleslab.
But an OS is much more than its kernel...

Google Android is an OS, as is a GNU/Linux distribution, both use "some version of Linux" (which is a kernel).

QNX has been employed now on Blackberry 10 devices which I guess is also derived for Linux. It's not open source either, in fact, very much not so. People are going wild on Blackberries decision to EOL the Playbook tablet. People want to be able to install their own OS on to the tablet if they no longer will support it but Blackberry refuse for obvious reasons. The Playbook is still in use with the Canadian military and many government organisations. Can't see how wiping it and installing your own OS would affect them but there ya go.
Many hackers have tried to root the Playbook but as of yet I haven't heard of anyone who has. Blackberry built the security into the hardware so you could never get passed the bootup to be able to do anything. They're also incorporating QNX in cars that will communicate with your blackberry devices. Apparently QNX is used in nuclear power stations etc because it is very secure and stable, but again, it's still a type of linux.

No QNX is not a type of Linux. Neither is FreeBSD a type of Linux. You can't really have a not open source anything derived from Linux, not without violating the GPL license of Linux.

Linux is just the kernel. Very few of the files and folders that make up the rest of the operating system are part of the Linux kernel. If various UNIX-like operating systems all have the same basic directory layout and command line programs, that because there are various standards like FHS for the directory layout, and POSIX, that various UNIX-like operating systems conform to to varying degrees.

Dont forget (as EJS indicates), Linux, * BSD, QNX, Mac OS and numerous other are Posix Compliant operating systems, which explains why there is such similarity between them.
