Re: Do they use Linux

Android use the Android operating system which is based on Linux.
Apple use iOS which is based on black magic.

Re: Do they use Linux

Android is derived from Linux - you could say it's a version of Linux as it uses the Linux Kernel - many of the drivers are often closed source though and quite specific for mobile devices.

They may be Linux-based but they aren't open source.

Re: Do they use Linux

The ANDROID source maybe available, but the code used in most of the tablets/phones is NOT. There is a lot of closed source drivers in them.
You cannot compile an android source and expect it to run on most tablets. You will not have any input etc.

Agreed, as per my reply

A few phone manufacturers release their code (kernel source code is available for my Acer Liquid E2 Duo for example) but, of course, it's only of real use for that particular combination of hardware.

Re: Do they use Linux

Many people equate Linux with open source.
They are often substantially identical - but not with mobile phones.
This message was written on a Linux, open source device.  Cheesy
