Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

When I connect to a Cyberghost VPN server, my t speed drops drastically. Eg. using an Android box connected via ethernet cable I get ~ 72.4 mbps, when I connect thru a Cyberghost server the speed drops to ~ 20mbps or even less. Using a Samsung tab A on 5GHZ wifi, no VPN= 73.8  with VPN = 27.7mbps.

I have cmpalined to Cyberghost who have suggested that " speed has a great deal to do with each user's particular Internet connection and settings enforced by the ISP"

Do PN limit speed when usinga VPN?Huh

Re: Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

What encryption protocol are you using?  eg. OpenVPN ?

Can you confirm vpn speeds are considerably faster if you use a Windows, linux or macOS computer?

Re: Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

You will always lose some speed due to latency, server congestion etc.

I lose between 2-5 megabits or so when using my VPN (express vpn) so find it fast enough for everything on my PN connection also using WiFi.

There is a lot of issues that can impact speed with VPN. I've steered clear of Cyberghost because of it's history.

Windows loses least, I'll try Linux. Android loses most, which is annoying with 2 tablets,  2 phones & a streaming box using it.

Re: Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

Can't say i've ever really noticed any problems when VPN'ing into my PC using 4G on my phone. That said when i first used to use it the connection was lighteningly fast, it isn't so much these days but i put that down to congestion through the networks that the traffic is routed through.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

If it is Openvpn, your android devices perhaps do not support AES hardware acceleration.  Try less secure/demanding legacy protocol like PPTP or L2TP if these are still supported by your VPN provider.

CyberGhost settings only seem to offer UDP  or TCP

Switching between them does not seem to make any difference.

Re: Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

I could be wrong, but if you are offered TCP or UDP selection options, it sounds like you may have installed the OpenVPN client software on your device to me.

note that PPTP and L2TP are less secure protocols.  ie. fine if you are not bothered about privacy, such as for accessing Netflix USA catalogue etc.

Re: Do PN limit speed when connecting to a VPN?

@bill888  thanks for the advice, I'll have a play.

I think I have only noticed the problem since I upgraded to 70 mbps from 36 a few weeks ago.
