Desktop Mac - crashed hard disk

Not mine, but a good friend.
Her (primary) hard disk crashed, fortunatly the Mac is still under warrenty, no worries as all the software and OS was replaced.
But one folder had several family photograph folders in, which she had not backed up.
Any tips on organisations or methods that could recover the photographs?

Re: Desktop Mac - crashed hard disk

When you say crashed hard I take it it was the hard drive that had failed? There are plenty of hard drive recovery companies out there depending on how much you want to spend and how important the photos were.
I know nothing about Macs but does a mac HD fit into any type of computer?

Presumably you are using a replacement hard drive and Apple put the old drive in the bin?

No Apple just replaced the hard drive, loaded all the OS and program files, then gave my friend the crashed drive in a box and the new system, its a Standard WD drive, was tempted to put it as a second drive in a spare PC desktop and 'see-what-I-could see'.

If the PC recognises it as a disk, it is at least spinning...
I understand that a mac uses a HFS+ file system - so you will probably need a Linux PC or a Linux CD to read the data.

Re: Desktop Mac - crashed hard disk

Could possibly try putting into a desktop and using a live cd to get stuff off  Undecided I know I did that with some stuff I lost from work. The HD only worked for a short while until it went proper dead so if you can manage to get it going go straight to the folder where the photos are and grab them onto a usb stick. you may not get a second chance. Shocked
Other than that you might have to go down the road of data recovery specialists.

Re: Desktop Mac - crashed hard disk

When my Powerbook crashed and data recovery firms were going to charge a bomb, I bought a cheap HD enclosure and used the old HD as an external drive to recover my files - worth a try - you can get enclosures for under a tenner.
