Dell XPS Laptop with no network socket; would an Apple Thunderbolt_Network adaptor work

I've bought an Apple Thunderbolt Adaptor; this fits into the Dell's Mini Display Port socket, BUT when other end

connected to my Router, my PC doesn't see a new Network Sad

It'd be useful if I had a hard wired connection to my Router when there are wifi issues, but
wondered if there's anything else I should be doing, or is the DELL socket just for connecting to remote monitor etc?

Using Win10 64 bit O/S.

Might be better off trying a USB Gigabit ethernet adaptor:

Fix

I concur.  A display port is to output to a display; a Thunderbolt port is rather more than that, even if it uses the same connector.  Using a Thunderbolt cable will not magically transform one into the other.
