So... Affinity is FREE ??????
so long as you have a CANVA ACCOUNT.. otherwise you cannot get Affinity...
From my quick query about cost of CANVA account it is £13 per month or £100 per year....
( hardly makes Affinity FREE ?????? )
Yes there is a 30 day free trial..but what do you do on day 31???
Libre Office and Open Office, are both FREE.. with NO regulation as to belonging to any external account.
MS publisher can still be bought on Ebay Various options on this search result..
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=Microsoft+Publisher+cd&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_sop=15
once you have bought it.... it is FREE !... and it is still cheaper than CANVA account !.
A good altternative to Windows Media Player is SM Player
Do a search on Google for ... How do I get SM Player for windows.....Some useful info in the result

@shutter Not sure I follow your logic, there.
https://www.canva.com/en_gb/pricing/ - FREE. £0/year for one person.
https://www.affinity.studio/download
(quote)
Do I need a Canva account to use Affinity?
Yes. Affinity is now brought to you by Canva, and your Canva account gives you access to Affinity and other Canva products and features.
Do I need Canva Pro or other premium Canva plan to use Affinity?
No. You can access all of Affinity’s vector, layout, and pixel tools for free with just a free Canva account. If you’d like to unlock Canva AI tools within Affinity, however, you will need a premium Canva plan.
(unquote).
However. Having created a free Canva account, I then went to download Affinity. https://www.affinity.studio/download
Had no idea which of the four Windows options to choose, so went to https://www.affinity.studio/help/windows-installer-types/
(quote)
Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type “Settings”
Open the Settings app.
Go to System > About
Under Device Specifications, find System Type
x64-based processor: Your computer uses a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor
ARM-based processor: Your computer uses an ARM processor (ARM64)
(unquote).
So. x64-based it turned out to be, so I selected the intel/amd version. So far so good.
However it didn't download as a normal file (checked downloads and it looked most odd) and then on the top-right-of-screen download-completed button, there was the following message:
Affinity x64.msix could harm your device. Do you want to keep it anyway?
... so I didn't 😐
The https://www.affinity.studio/help/windows-installer-types/ page didn't then offer much by way of clarity:
(quote)
While you cannot run Windows (ARM) and Enterprise (ARM) installers on X64 versions of Windows, Windows (Intel/AMD) and Enterprise (Intel/AMD) installers are compatible with ARM versions of Windows. However, installing the Windows (Intel/AMD) version of Affinity on an ARM computer will force it to run in emulation, which will negatively affect performance.
(unquote).
So I'm really not sure 😐 maybe I can't do the Affinity side of things. The Canva account itself, though - if it is, genuinely, free longer term, which it looked to be (?) - well maybe could come in useful at some stage.

waldo@susie:~/Downloads> file *x64.msix
Affinity x64.msix: Zip archive data, at least v4.5 to extract, compression method=deflate
Potentially harmful, I guess; I suspect if that's how Affinity are distributing it and it comes from a trusted source it'll be fine.

I have been using Affinity since they were owned by Serif (based in Nottingham) and have continued to use the suite after they were acquired by Canva. No issues running the exe file once you have granted access. There is also a help form where you can open a call “support.affinity.studio”.
There is a subscription option but unless you want AI tools I would not bother and stick with the free version.

Have to admit I have no idea *whatsoever* what you meant by the above (?)
I should maybe explain here that I'm very "non-techy" - some stuff I understand (html, bits of php and mysql), but a lot of it I just don't. Even really patient explanation doesn't always get the message through ![]()
@TheRoadCrew wrote:Potentially harmful, I guess; I suspect if that's how Affinity are distributing it and it comes from a trusted source it'll be fine.
Yes that made sense, and thank you. Still a bit wary because of the age of my PC (approaching seven) and not a great deal of hard drive available (total capacity only 118Gb) but figured I should try downloading again.
This morning there had been a follow-up e-mail from Affinity, with a download link. So I clicked that.
What downloaded was not the same as yesterday - yesterday was some long filename maybe with CR in it somewhere, and not with the usual dot-something suffix at the end. Unfortunately didn't screenshot before letting it delete, so beyond that I don't know.
Today's download was visibly different. Affinity x64.msix, it said. With a box (graphic) of some sort, to its left.
So I clicked on it.
Somewhat reassured now that this is (probably) going to be okay.
Other stuff to do, right now, but will try the install later. Again, thanks for the help, appreciated.

Thanks for that. I've got as far as re-downloading (as you'll see from the post above) but not installed as yet.
There is - however - no sign yet of an .exe file. Not entirely sure what's going to happen when I click 'Install', but I'll post back later, I guess, if all goes well.

Affinity Publisher is available for download as a .exe file. I've got a paid licence, but it might work without since Canva said that it is now free.
https://store.serif.com/en-gb/update/universal-licence/
It won't open Microsoft Publisher files directly though. They need to be opened in MS Publisher first and saved as .pdf files before they can be opened in Affinity Publisher. Some formatting might be lost in the process, but my simple documents turned out ok.

The file program on Linux identifies the 'Affinity x64.msix' file as being, essentially, a ZIP file.
If you have something like WinZIP installed you should be able to view the contents before installing:

Thank you for clarifying
tbh I don't know the first thing about Linux (aside from having heard of it) but it's like a different operating system, yes (?)
@TheRoadCrew wrote:>>waldo@susie:~/Downloads> file *x64.msix Affinity x64.msix: Zip archive data, at least v4.5 to extract, compression method=deflate
Ref waldo@susie: Some dim recall, now, of having seen something a bit like that in MS DOS, years and years back, 1993-ish, where my eldest (then nine) explained about putting dir at the command prompt, to list the contents of a directory. Same sort of principle, yes (?)
@TheRoadCrew wrote:If you have something like WinZIP installed you should be able to view the contents before installing
Well this is where it gets weird. Yes I have WinZip
or at least something that unpacks zipped files, via an 'extract' option.
However. When I clicked 'Install' on Affinity, there was none of the usual 'running setup' or whatever. Twenty seconds of decreasing percentages, then an endlessly-moving blue circle. Eventually I clicked on the icon that had installed itself in the (footer) taskbar, and it said something like 'Affinity is not responding' then 'reporting the problem to Microsoft' and then it closed (and vanished from the taskbar).
I wondered if it had failed altogether to install, but no, Affinity could be seen on clicking the Windows icon bottom left of the desktop monitor. Selecting it brought up a large graphic that told me to log in to Canva through my browser (and it generated a new tab where my login details were already in place, to allow me to do so). And hey presto! I was in.
Yet how. No sign of a WinZip set-up nor of any included files like those shown in your graphic, during an installation that disclosed nothing of what was actually being added to the PC. I checked the properties on the C drive and it seems to have gone down about 2Gb from a couple of days back (I'd shifted a significant amount to the 2Tb backup drives so as to try to leave 40Gb - approx 1/3 - free space on the main hard drive) though from your list doesn't look like 2Gb of content - oh, just realised your screenshot shows only part of the list, judging by the blue scrollbar at the side.
Meanwhile no sign of Affinity in Windows (C:) Program Files nor in Windows (C:) Program Files (x86). The file listings are (both) alphabetical so it's not like I've missed seeing them somehow.
So I looked on Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features - Uninstall a Program, on the basis that *that* might give some clue as to where Affinity was installed.
The 'uninstall' page is also alphabetical.
And Affinity's not there either.
Random 😐

No, that's just it - it *is* installed, as per my last post.
Was installed yesterday, as described, in 20 seconds flat.
I have no idea *where*, but it's there, and it's accessible.
And it's amazing.
Looks to have an awesome range of capabilities - well beyond anything I might ever need or use, but who knows.
Haven't yet figured out how make the tiny text and even-tinier enclosed pictures on the "Learn" videos, big enough to be legible/comprehensible, but I'll get there ![]()

@Penny msix is just the latest interation of Windows application install packaging. The file contains all the components i.e. executables (.exe) , libraries and configuration files needed for the application.
Traditionally these have been packaged into .msi files but .msix seems to be an improved packaging mechanism.
Executing the msi or msix file installs the application, creates shortcuts and menu entries automatically

Yes (in the interest of simplicity).

Yes. And dir will still give you a directory listing on CMD.EXE and PowerShell on Windows 10 / 11

I suspect you have missed them 'cos Affinty has been installed in the WindowsApps folder under Program Files and the WindowsApps folder is hidden by default.
https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-access-windowsapps-folder/ will show you how to access the hidden folder if you really want to see what's there.

There is a forum - search Creofora Affinity where you can get tips. Sadly the old excellent Serif forum was closed down when Canva took them over. Check out the Elaine Giles and Affinity Revolution tutorials on YouTube.
