Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

You can't just delete the file!
Control panel
Power options
Hibernate tab
Uncheck Enable Hibernation

Defragmenting hiberfil.sys is similar to the technique for defragmenting large files using another drive.
1. Turn off hibernation so that the file is deleted.

This works in W7 or Vista.
It does not work in XP. You have to disable hibernation, reboot and the delete hiberfil.sys manually.

If I could find it. as the only location is C:\ .....  Undecided

In Windows explorer Folder Options (in the Tools menu), View tab you'll probably need Show hidden files and folders enabled and Hide protected operating system files disabled to see it.

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

Hibernate is slightly differently worded on Vista...
Control Panel
Power Options
Choose when the computer sleeps
then you are presented with two options (for laptop) battery  and mains
drop down menus give various times, and eventually "Never"..
that was selected in my mains power.... but not in my battery power.... (now changed that to "never")
Do I have to re-boot now?
@jelv.... that is already checked.... to show hidden files..... Smiley

Oh God, just done a Google. Do you really want to get that disk space back?

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

Well, to look at it one way,..... it is 3 Gb of space "I" could use.... rather than storing stuff the computer uses....  I have the hibernation turned off. so when I close the computer down, it is no different to when it is shut down by the computer (laptop)  itself...
The only advantage with Hibernation ON... is when you use a laptop on battery, and it saves battery power.... then, say I was at a meeting, and did not use the computer for a while, then needed to refer to a previously uploaded page of info, the hibernation comes into use....
otherwise with it switched off.... I would still have to find an locate the page, ..... as I don`t use my laptop  that way, I can see no advantage in having hibernation ON...
I can store a lot of pics, and music on 3Gb..... much more useful to me than being able to recall a page I was using half an hour ago.... !

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

If the Page file is fragmented you can make a note of the current settings, temporarily turn it off, defrag the entire drive and then turn paging back on again.
In W7 you go to System Properties - Avanced tab. Click on Settings under performance then Select the Advanced tab.
Under Virtual Memory click Change. Make a note of the current settings then ensure Automatically manage paging file... is unticked. Then select No paging file. Reboot (this should delete the Page file), defrag then reset the Page file to it's original settings

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

I ran Smart Defrag on my XP System yesterday using the "Fast Optimize" option.
All files, including hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys, were completely defragmented using this option.
Its available here: http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

Ran Defraggler on a Server 2k8 machine, and  a Win7 machine.
The win 7 completed. then when i tried to do the degfrag of 'free space' it hung.
The 2k8 didnt even finish, and hung mid-defrag  Shocked i dont THINK ive lost anything, but still... not that impressed Sad
anyone else had that ?

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

@Matt_2k34
I tried Defraggler and was not impressed. So I tried Smart Defrag and have used it ever since - over 1 year now!
If you've never tried it then give it a go. See my previous posting fo the link.

I always thought you shouldn't defrag a server

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

and why not?
The drive in question is just a large storage drive, it is serving no "processes" so moving items around on it will cause no conflict.

Re: Defragmentation - a few queries

It's a shame Windows in this day and age doesn't use a fragmentation resistant filesystem like ext3 or WAFL. I seem to remember them looking at something like this for Windows 7 but dropped it due to time constraints.
