So I am waiting with baited breath to see what happens.

Should that be "bated breath"?  Grin

What happened about the monitor?  I get the impression that LCD monitors may not be too difficult to repair if you know what you are doing but there aren't many people around who do know how to do it.

Actually they seem pretty easy to repair because for some reason lot of them share the same weak point - capacitors. You'd be amazed how many of those pesky things start leaking and cause devices to die a premature death. They're also cheap as chips to obtain (though granted a little hard to find) and easy peasy to replace too. Admittedly you do need some soldering equipment but thats easy enough to obtain.

Re: Dead monitor, repair or replace

I've probably come to this thread a bit late, but if your monitor is only 3 years old, I would have thought that you'd have a case under the Sale of Goods and Services Act for the monitor not being "fit for purpose". Have you tried contacting the retailer that you bought the monitor from?

If you succeeded, it would mean that all home insurance companies would go out of business!

Re: Dead monitor, repair or replace

By "home insurance companies", I assume you're talking about extended guarantees. I think they're a complete waste of money when you consider the rights you have under the Sales of Goods and Purchases act.
I had some luck with Tesco recently.

Re: Dead monitor, repair or replace

No I wasn't.
As you say those extended warranties are worthless.
However, it is very doubtful that a 3 year old monitor (an electronic item) would be deemed to be faulty when sold.
