My Daughters machine is saying the DVD drive is working normally but when you put a disc in(CD, or DVD) it doesnt run and says insert disk).
Is it simply bust and I'll have to shell out £15.00 for a new DVD ROM drive or is there something I could try first (I've checked the drivers )

Probaly pointless, but have you tried unplugging the cables and reseating them?

Check out: Control panel/system/device manager, see if the DVD drive is shown in there, if not as Hulls say's it's more than likely the 40 way connector out of position.
