Quote from: shutter After you have filled up the ram, you could also give them a clean up, using CCleaner. ...... run it a couple of times, then go to the Registry cleaner (also on ccleaner) and do a couple of runs on that.... could help with speeding up the boot, etc.
Thanks Shutter, great advice, I've run CCleaner at at first sight it seems to have helped a bit but still too slow.
Do you think getting 2GB would help even more?
Thanks

As noted earlier, 512MB just isn't enough for XP these days.
Even if you have other problems I would always upgrade the memory first as it WILL make any other diagnostic/repair activity quicker.
As for going to 1GB or 2GB that's often a question of cost-effectiveness. In newer PC's 2GB costs almost nothing, but in older ones the price can be 5 or 10 times higher (and don't even think about upgrading RDRAM!).
So, with only 2 slots and 512MB in one it's often "pragmatic" to just add another 512 in the spare slot. It does for most.

I've just used Crucial to scan my PC and It says that currently installed are two DDR PC2100 256mb of ram.
It then goes on to recommend putting two 1gb DDR PC2700 or PC3200.
Thanks

Within limits, and assuming your motherboard supports it, faster is better.
The reason why they don't recommend the lower speeds is probably that they don't supply them any more - the lowest which shows up on their site is PC2700

You'll probably only find out the highest speed the PC can effectively use by looking in technical specs, or maybe the BIOS settings.
Chances are though that what it has already is as fast as it can go.

then it branched out into all kinds of varieties...
Is it basically accurate to say that virtually any DDR memory (say PC2700 and upwards) is compatible on a modern desktop PC?

I could just walk into the shop and say "a pint of memory please" - or something like that...
