D-Link wireless adapter freezes my computer when I plug it in

Hi
For the last 6 months I have been using the D-Link DWA-111 wireless adapter to connect to my router with no problems, until I tried to use it last week.  Angry
I have tried every USB port on the PC, but every time I plug the adapter in the computer freezes and I have to reboot. I have even tried a brand new DWA-111 straight out the sealed wrapper, but to no avail.
I have even tried formatting the C drive but it still happens!  I am running XP SP2, can anyone help me?  (p.s. i only know a bit about computers, so don't make it too complicated! Smiley  )

Re: D-Link wireless adapter freezes my computer when I plug it in

Why not install a PCI card?
USB connectors ""dongles" are known to be flakey.
Formatting your hard drive is unlikely to help.
Actually, it's probably ideal to get the same make adaptor as your router,
for maximum compatibility... Smiley

Re: D-Link wireless adapter freezes my computer when I plug it in

Try plugging it in with all other usb devices unplugged from your computer.
I have seen this happen before and it turned out to be the printer usb cable that was actually causing the problem.
Replaced the printer cable and problem sorted - worth a try

Before you plug it in you must install the software and then reboot then and only then plug it in.
If it already installed remove all the software reboot and start again.
SP3 would be a good idea

Re: D-Link wireless adapter freezes my computer when I plug it in

I use a D-link DWL-G122 USB adaptor but did experience a troublesome error message after installing SP3 for XP. This is a known problem with a fix published on the D-link website, something to do with the incompatibility of the D-link wireless utility with SP3.  I am not familiar with the DWA-111, but it might be worth checking with the FAQs at D-link support.

Re: D-Link wireless adapter freezes my computer when I plug it in

I think it probably will be the SP3 that's doing it.  I've tried the other suggestions above, so it looks like I'll have to try the new driver. Thanks to everyone who replied, for all your help.
