Cruzer 2GB memory stick & Linux Mint 9 Isadora

Another problem... I need help please.
just tried to transfer some files from my no1 laptop, to my no2 laptop via a memory stick...
should be straight forward, just plug it into the USB port, and it shows up as  a  drive with the files...
Oh Dear No.... this is Linux.... get a message box with a big NO ENTRY sign saying
Unable to mount 2.0 GB File system
Error mounting:mount:wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg (vertical line, wherever that is on the keyboard)  tail o so
and the obligatory  [ OK ]
No... its not OK...  Sad
what do I do please?

Not having much joy with USB devices at the moment are we shutter...
As Waldo described in the 3g thread , plug the Cruzer in and then in a terminal window run dmesg. You should see something like this
Quote

[ 2792.424908] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk

It sounds like its getting an error from trying to read the device but if you post the dmesg output we can hopefully see why.

Re: Cruzer 2GB memory stick & Linux Mint 9 Isadora

Not so sure it is the USB sticks... more likely it is the Linux SYSTEM not being "compatible" with "normal everyday items"...
Will hold fire on this one, for the moment, and see if I can get the 3G mobile broadband sorted first....
(thanks for the above... will check it out and get back later... Wink )

Re: Cruzer 2GB memory stick & Linux Mint 9 Isadora

I have MORE luck with usb devices on Linux than I do in M$. E.g. my scanner (a canon LIDE) just works when plugged in - via Xsane)
I had issues with my ipod but that was due to Apple changing the stakes with the new ones (I had to change a config from Partiition to Disk or vice versa cant remember now)
You don't say what FORMAT the usb disk is, and does it have any silly protection s/w on it encryption the disk etc?

My USB flash key things work on both M$ and Linux.  Grin

The format of the USB stick?  well I don`t know... I just plugged it in on my windows laptop and it self installed and worked. !... so I would have expected the same with Linux... (or maybe not)...  Undecided

Don`t know how I can do all that, cos I can`t use the memory stick to transfer it to this laptop...!..
Can copy type the "plain language" in it`s line order... but do you need all the figures before each line?
starts off with a line number
347.112159 usb storage device found at 3
usb storage waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb storage device scan complete
scsi 2;0;0;0 Direct Access  sandisk  U3 Cruzer Micro  7.01 PQ ; 0 ANSI ; CCS
attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
[sdb] Write Protect is off
Mode Sense ; 45 00 00 08
assuming drive cache ; write through
assuming drive cache ; write through
352.126125 sdb ; sdb1
assuming drive cache ; write through
attached SCSI  removable disk
{{{{{ The next two lines are repeated 3 more times with different numbers on the line start.}}}}}
FAT; count of clusters too big 9122075 0
VFS can`t find  a valid FA filesystem on dev sdb1

Hope that means something. ! Undecided

Looks like its FAT from the info posted below

Ahh!, Linux seems to think the stick is corrupt and therefore can't mount it.
Have you tried running SCANDISK or CHKDSK ( never quite sure what it is these days ) on it in a Windows system ?
OR does Mint have the Disc Utility ? ( not sure since I use Ubuntu ) If so then the Cruzer should appear in that, even though it can't mount it. If you select the Cruzer there should be a Check Disc option ( see screendump )
