Contents in Word 2007

I have been able to make a contents list by selecting a Styles group for each heading and using the Automatic Option from the Resource tab.
This gives a Contents list something like:
Quote
Contents
First Heading....................2
Second heading...............4
Third heading....................7

But I want to use sub-headings, too. So I added a second Style group for each sub-heading but I still get the same list as above whereas this is what I really want:
Quote
Contents
First Heading....................2
  Sub-Heading 1...............2
  Sub-Heading 2...............3
Second heading...............4
  Sub-Heading 1..............5
  Sub-Heading 2..............6
Third heading...................7
  Sub-Heading 1..............7

Does any know how to acheive my goal, if it can be done?

Re: Contents in Word 2007

Further investigation seems to suggest is only works if you use Heading 1 & Heading 2 (possibly Heading 3 for another Sub-heading level) and not any of the other styles available.
This seems a little restrictive so perhaps there is still a step or so that I have missed or not understanding correctly.

Re: Contents in Word 2007

Click somewhere within the generated table of contents.
in Word 2000: choose Insert > Table of Contents
in Word 2002 and Word 2003: choose Insert > References > Table of Contents
in Word 2007 and Word 2010:  click References > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents (if the ToC is in a content control, be sure you've clicked the ToC itself, and not any "Contents" heading above the ToC)
Change the Show levels option to the number of levels you want displayed.

Re: Contents in Word 2007

Generally TOC only contains Heading styles, and by default will provide the kind of layout you were looking for..  However, you can also include other styles in your TOC:  Once you have created it, right click anywhere in the TOC and select edit field.  Select TOC from the list of field types and click Table of Contents button which will appear.  Then click options which should allow you to select any style within your document and assign it to a TOC level. The "OK" your way back out.  Very useful for including things like Appendices

Re: Contents in Word 2007

Thanks for the replies.
@mossgrove not been able to try your solution as the report I was writing had to be submitted Tuesday evening. Since then I've been sorting my new build PC.

Re: Contents in Word 2007

If you do as mossgrove suggested and assign a style to level 3 you will still need to do what I posted to make it appear.

I should have a look at LyX.
I've attached a page from their documentation - produced with LyX.  Smiley

Re: Contents in Word 2007

How does that help with formatting a table of contents in Word?

Re: Contents in Word 2007

Sometimes you need a proper publishing quality tool; a simple Word Processor doesn't always suffice.

Re: Contents in Word 2007

True - but not for a simple table of contents!
