Computer Crashes

Hi All, can anyone out there help on this. My machine has started to crash at least once a day for no apparent reason, no blue screen just completely blank & then reboots itself. It has 2gb of RAM, hard drive is only 40gb & is about 2/3 full. I'm running XP Pro SP3.
I've done all the usual clean ups & defrags, religiously run anti spyware (Adaware)  after every session, AVG free & Zonealarm firewall are installed. The only new piece of hardware I've installed recently is a Belkin MIMO router. Can't seem to pin anything down that can be responsible, the only thing I've noticed is things start to get a bit flaky & slow then bosh. Is there any stats I can look at that would tell me what the problem is or rather the cause of the problem? Huh

Re: Computer Crashes

always my first question is 'how long ago was it cleaned inside?'  please describe any symptoms you first noticed from maybe even weeks ago that led up to this current behaviour.

Re: Computer Crashes

Had the casing off & blew out the dust about 2 weeks ago which I do do from time to time - do you think overheating could be the problem? I'ts always been a bit temperamental in the 3 years I've had it. Apart from the flakiness I don't always get any warning that it's about to crash. I think there's a conflict with something but no idea what.  The event viewer shows quite a few errors & warnings but I have no idea how to translate these, if I did know would that give me the answer?

Re: Computer Crashes

if it will stay up long enough to download and burn a linux livecd, knoppix has a good utility livecd, you could run memtest as a start to eliminate ram problems.
one common occurrence when cleaning is that cables and cards become slightly unseated.  sometimes a little more than blowing air through is needed.  if you can remove the fans from the cpu heatsink, you may find a pile of dust underneath.
first make sure all your cables and cards are securely seated and run the box with the side off for a while.

Re: Computer Crashes

Checked all the connections, all ok will do a more thorough clean. The 1st bit about the Linux is over my head, are you suggesting I change the operating system? Will run Memtest overnight & see if it throws anything up, if all else fails, anyone got a b****y big sledge hammer!!  Angry

Re: Computer Crashes

You get an excellent memory test on a Linux boot disk.
It won't overwrite your Windows or anything else.
It allows you to run the memory test on your entire memory, without any interference from an OS.
If you choose to install Linux though, I think you would notice an improvement though  Smiley Smiley

Re: Computer Crashes

the beauty of livecds is that you can 'try before you buy', as it were.  they are enormously useful as diagnostic tools and some distros, knoppix and now pclinuxos, are producing remasters for specific functions, such as the mythtvos, one dedicated to music production, another to video, and, of course, diagnosing and fixing the windows machines of our friends.

I have a 28 pounder which is available for hire. You might like to start with the 14 pounder if you're not used to swinging the Big Bess.
I've got an older PC that sits beside its replacement (the one what I am using now) and it did all the things you describe yours doing. I still use it from time to time and it still does the same falling-to-pieces act. I tried everything that has been suggested here (except changing the OS) and nothing has worked. The only reason I keep it going is that the sound card doesn't fit in my new box.
I hope you have more luck than I did and you don't need that hammer.

Re: Computer Crashes

First step is to see if there is anything in the event logs. Try and see when it happens is it when a certain program is running or a certain time these may give clues. If you are running a few programs it may be upper memory as long as it only uses the bottom of ram it may be ok but may crash when you push it.
Try running a few programs at a time and see if that does it

Re: Computer Crashes

@artificer & axisofevil - this livecd thingy could you give me a link as I really don't know what I'm looking for (methinks I had better not meddle?!)
@geewiz - your wayward machine isn't an HP is it by any chance?
@samuria - yesterday there were loads of errors/warnings in the event logs but as a non-techy  I don't know what they mean msinstaller error 11706 came up quite a lot.
The frustrating thing is I seem to spend more time trying to find out what these problems are instead of  actually doing work on the b thing Sad
I need to monitor the situation & try to build up some sort of picture, still not sure whether it is memory related as it crashes when my other half  is using it & he only really uses it for ebay. Thanks all for the replies.

Re: Computer Crashes

Try http://www.knoppix.org/. You download it, burn the file to a CD, then turn your computer off and restart it with the CD in the drive. As others have said, it doesn't overwrite anything on your hard drive unless you ask it to, but runs a version of linux straight from the CD. If you still get crashes you know the problem is hardware related because you are running without Windows. If it doesn't crash you know there is a problem with Windows or an application. This won't tell you exactly what the problem is, but may give you some idea.

Re: Computer Crashes

There is nothing exciting there but its the date time you had the crash which is the most useful we are only looking for errors not information. You seem to have had problems installing something do you know what it was?
