Cinnamon "Shell"

Mint are now supporting Cinnamon as the new shell.

With Gnome 2 no longer an option we lost one of the most important upstream components our Linux Mint desktop was based on. Our entire focus shifted from innovating on the desktop, to patching existing alternatives such as Gnome Shell. We used MATE and MGSE to provide an easier transition away from Gnome 2, but without being able to truly offer an alternative that was better than Gnome 2. Both MATE and Gnome Shell are promising projects but MATE’s ultimate goal is to replicate Gnome 2 using GTK+ and Gnome Shell doesn’t provide what we need in a desktop and is going in a direction we do not want to follow. So for these reasons we’re designing a new desktop called Cinnamon, which leverages new technology and implements our vision.

Re: Cinnamon "Shell"

That looks interesting. When the main developer goes along its own path without depending upon others can only be good, so long as they have the resources to to do the job properly. Watching this space!

Re: Cinnamon "Shell"

Essentially, is there any difference between GNOME3+MGSE and Cinnamon?
E.g.
The non-Cinnamon version...

According to Clem the reason for the fork is in the differences of opinion between the the GNOME developers and the Mint developers over the direction gnome-shell is taking.
Cinnamon looks set to be the default in Mint 13.
Clem has made the bold prediction that these two desktops [Cinnamon and MATE] will quickly become the #1 and #2 most popular desktops withi... (Comment no. 58)

Given my small pol here, it could very well be, most people prefer a G2 type shell over the G3/Unutty one.
If Cinnamon can give us back some control over our desktop then I will be switching to it. At the moment I am staying with Mint 11, I have M12 installed but cannot get used to it, that and the fact that the MM keys don't control RadioTray anymore is another reason to stay with M11 at the moment  Wink

Re: Cinnamon "Shell"

I'm confused.
We have GNOME3, MGSE, MATE and Cinnamon - all based on GNOME3.
There'll probably be bits of rubbish Unity kicking around too, out of sight...
Sounds like bug heaven.
Actually I quite like the combination of the GNOME 3 style + a decent menu.
I don't want a new desktop for every day of the week.

Re: Cinnamon "Shell"

MATE isn't based on GNOME 3, it's GNOME 2 renamed.
MGSE is a collection of extensions for gnome-shell, cinnamon is a fork of gnome-shell.
There are other components to the desktop environment, like the file manager, which now features correct hard disk manufacturer SI units for file sizes, and there's the annoying new style find thing in the gedit text editor, which has even spread to LibreOffice 3.4.

Re: Cinnamon "Shell"

Hadn't noticed that file size thing
but...nautilus gives a file size as
Quote
[685.3 kB (685,258 bytes)

Quote
ls -l  '/home/jeremy/MyScreenshot3.png'
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeremy public 685258 2012-01-03 13:28 /home/jeremy/MyScreenshot3.png

Quote
ls -lh  '/home/jeremy/MyScreenshot3.png'
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeremy public 670K 2012-01-03 13:28 /home/jeremy/MyScreenshot3.png

Which is a bit senseless.  Embarrassed

Looking at the files on GitHub, Cinnamon appears to be of appropriate vintage.

That's just what's left after doing find and replace "gnome-shell" with "cinnamon"!
