Changing from router to ubiquiti dream machine

Hi,

(I think this is a general connection query as opposed to Ubiquiti specifically)

I am reconnecting to a Dream Machine after a 'break', having used Plusnet router in the interim. The  Dream machine has been 'found'  in the Ubiquiti app, though message is 'internet not detected'. Wiring is Broadband to modem, modem to dream machine. Help suggestions are that I might have to contact ISP to authorise MAC address for modem. Is this something Plusnet could do (talk about MAC addresses are above my knowledge base)?

When online and using Plusnet router I am not connected to modem so can't access any internal info from it. I also don't have mobile signal at home so can't have access via phoneto it when trying to resolve anything.

Is there another way to check modem is working okay (relevant lights are on!) ?

Any advice appreciated.

Re: Changing from router to ubiquiti dream machine

  • What modem are you using ?
  • What broadband do you have ? - ADSL, FTTC, SoGEA, or FTTP
  • Does the modem have the correct DSL line parameters set for the relevant ADSL or VDSL ?
  • Assuming FTTC or SoGEA, do you have the VLAN tag set to 101 in the modem's configuration, or none for ADSL.
  • Whatever the broadband type, there should be no VLAN enabled (on the WAN port) in the UDM.
  • Is the UDM to modem link configured as PPPoE, with Plusnet username and password entered in the UDM

Yes, if you wire a PC directly to the modem, and configure the PC's ethernet port as a PPPoE connection, you 'should' be able to get online if the modem and network port PPPoE parameters are correctly set.

I have personally had all sorts of weird and wonderful modem and router configurations, and never heard of that before.

I think that is a red herring, and Plusnet would have no idea if you asked them.

Assuming that you have a Plusnet Hub 1 or Hub 2:

Remove the dsl cable from the hub and connect the Ethernet cable from your modem in the Red labelled hub WAN socket. No other changes are required. This simply by passes the hub modem and uses your other one.
