Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

Sorry if this seems a bit novice but im totally new to wireless networks
1. How do i change my WPA key to something stronger and how often should i change it?
2. Is the Thomson 585v7 WPA encrypion 64, 128, 256 or 504bit?

ive found a WPA key generator at http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/partner-lp_wireless-key-generator/wireless-key-generator.html#Gene...
Thanks a lot for any replies

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

I had a spot of bother finding that one as well, you need to open up the wirless network from the menu on the left and then hit the tiny configure link in the top right to get to where you set the security and stuff.  You can choose what level of encryption it uses as well as the type.  if no one fills in more details I'll cover all the basses once I get back in the house and can access my routers admin.
I would have to recomend against using random wpa key generators, you are much better off using a phrase you can remember and switching in special characters for some of the letters.  wpa is strong enough that BruteForce attacks aint worth it, so there is no need for anything as cryptic as a random key (just don't go making it your name or anything like that).  That said there is no need to use random keys for wep either, since the back door on that one is wide enough to walk an elephant through and anyone with half a mind can get access to your network with next to no effort at all, regardless of how cryptic you make your key.

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

I've set up two of these routers and in both cases they were preconfigured to WPA-PSK and the key was also preset (it was provided on a note within the box that the router came in).
It seemed reasonably strong to me in that it contained random letters and numbers so I left it as it was. Don't know if this was correct, however.

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

Since the code is printed on the bottom of the router, it's fairly easy to crack!
BTW I'd like to know why "Administrator" is only allowed limited functionality on this model of router.  Sad Sad

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

OK, here we go, the long version.
First, we log into the router using an administrator level account and select "Home Network" from the left hand side
Now click on the link under Wirless, next to the Pylon type thing.
You are now on the screen with the evasive "configure" link in the top right corner tucked between Details and Help, click this and your where you want to be.
There, that should cover all the bases.

So what's all this about?
Seems like the WAN side has more privileges than poor old Administrator.
I don't fancy doing the root reset procedure on the router.
I might get locked out by all that security.  Cry Cry

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

I'm sure I'll get jumped all over if i'm wrong about this, but that looks right for the facilities that the router offer.  Remember PN were such huge fans of these things because it let them play about with the router and get information withought them having to "bother" us.  I'm fairly sure that the "any service" relaits mainly, although probably not exclusivly, to diagnostic reports and procedures that would be of little use to your average end user, but can help PN Tech Support diagnose what's up easier.  Although I don't agree with the fact that we don't get access to it at all.  I think that there should be the inclusion for those who do know, and have enough savie not to bugger things up to be abble to access the features as well.

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

I believe Thomson applied all this security to stop programs like DMT from working properly.
I don't know their name but I've seen allusions that this was due to complaints from a
"British ISP" - the name is never mentioned.
I hope PlusNet are innocent.  Cheesy

Re: Changing WPA key on Thomson 585v7 Wireless Router

I would have to assume that they are, since I signed up just as they were getting the tommie's in (hence why they botched sending me my router, the system didn't catch all the pending deliveries) and when I spoke to the guys at tech support the day it finaly arrived, they didn't have a clue about how they worked Grin All they knew was that in certain circumstances these routers were supposedly going to make there life easier.  Not realy the information I was looking for when I phoned them up to ask the very same question that the OP asked in this thread Grin Grin

To comment though, the guy I spoke to did take time out and played with the router, then called me back about an hour later with the answer to my question.  So absoloutly no fault with the service, find me another company who would do that for you, sure as fuck not BT anyways Wink

Actually, I've just gone into that configure screen and discovered that the wireless channel was set to automatic (for me it had chosen channel 11).
Since nobody nearby uses channel 1, I changed the auto to manual and chose channel 1.
Result!
Improved wireless performance!!!!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
