I will get right to the point, where are they by default?
I have been implementing Fail2ban across my servers (CentOS) to stop the endless barrage of dictionary attacks. It is a very easy to use package that appears to work really well.
I have it successfully blocking IP's os SSH on all servers, Dovecot on the mailservers etc.
I have a problem with Proftpd though, I cannot find the log files. Folder /var/log/proftpd is empty on all servers with proftpd running.

I think proftpd logs via the syslog daemon by default until configured otherwise.

Check TransferLog in your proftpd config file. If it's not there, try setting it. Instructions are at http://www.proftpd.org/localsite/Userguide/linked/config_ref_LogFormat.html
