Can't access anything

My father has a problem with his laptop, the mouse pointer is working ok but when he clicks to access anything, eg, internet, it just won't open it.  I can't close it down and restart it or anything, it is just stuck.  Any ideas, please.

Is he using a touch pad or an external mouse and which make of laptop is it

It is an HP 530 laptop and he is using a touch pad.

Plug a mouse in.

I would agree with that but then I hate touch pads.

Thanks for your replies, it is now sorted, i had to go into mouse on the control panel and enable the touchpad function.  He had no idea how it happened, he didn't do anything of course!
