Brother laser - print issues

I have just got a Brother laser from freecycle. It is printing a light grey tint on the paper.
Is it the toner cart? Or the drum??
The toner is from office depo, and the drum is original.

Re: Brother laser - print issues

I'd say more likely the drum or one of the rollers, can you try and clean the rollers first?
Is this a model that you just refill with toner, or does it use cartridges (with drum in) that have been refilled?

Re: Brother laser - print issues

It's the HL2030 so the toner is a separate unit. I think it has been refilled by the supplier, given the large plug and a sticker saying warranty void etc on it.
I did try a quick clean of the visible rollers, but will give it a better going over later. (Just got it today)

Re: Brother laser - print issues

An even tint is probably the drum - if it repeats at short intervals it's probably a roller.
If someone spilled toner inside, you could try a vacuum cleaner.

Do NOT try a vacuum cleaner.,!
The particles are so fine they will pass through any filter and damage the motor ,!

Re: Brother laser - print issues

And don't ever use a vacuum cleaner on a laser printer which is hooked up to a network.
Long story but two new 24 Port switches later and the business was back up and running ............

Re: Brother laser - print issues

I will try taking it apart and giving the drum a good clean, with a soft cloth.
Last time I worked on laser printers was in the early 90's so well out of touch with them. At least this is easier to work on than the old horses I used to have to service.

Re: Brother laser - print issues

I've hoovered a networked printer, successfully.
However, I switched the printer off first...
I removed the toner cartridge first, to give better access to its guts.
It wasn't my vacuum cleaner and it didn't seem to be too bothered.  Smiley

When I last worked in an office, I remember the "service" guy hoovering out the MFD's maybe he unplugged them first. They were the large HP units with multi paper bins etc.

As was the one I hoovered before the toner / vacuum plastics generated enough static to create a very large spark which proceeded to knock out half of the network  Grin

Re: Brother laser - print issues

take the printer outside stand upwind and give it a blast with a few tins of air duster (don't shake the tins though  Wink )
90% of the dust wont be removed by cloths but they will smear the stuff round and possibly damage the drum, we used to chuck the printers out when the drums got gunked up (cheaper to buy a new one than buy a new drum)

We used to wet the cloths or cotton buds with alcohol.
Maybe a substitute for industrial strength alcohol can be found?  Grin
