Broken ? ? ? ? ?

Can someone please explain to me.... how I can have "broken packages"  in this scenario...

Download Linux Mint 20.1 Mate 64bit

Burn it to a USB using   <     mkusb   >  on a 32GB cruzer disk.

boot up on a Dell Inspiron 1558 laptop.. ( mint 20.1 already installed and fully functional and updated.

Start the "live cd" version on the desktop...

Search for WINE in the Software Manager.....   it shows   "Not Available"..

Go to "Package Manager"     enter a search for  "wine-stable"    it returns

Wine                 5.0

wine-stable     3.0

Select Wine 5.0...   Click   "Mark for installation "...... it lists 90% of the files to be removed before continuing....

Click   "Apply"... then get the message...

cannot install... you have broken packages....

WOT  ?        this is a "new install"......

how come  ?   who put them there ?

how do I mend them ?

There is no indication of what packages are broken...

nor any suggestion on how to "mend" them.

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

What's the output from

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install <packagename>

where <packagename> is wine, wine-stable, wine-sucks or whatever you're trying to install?

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@TheRoadCrew  Thanks for the response...

here is the sequence of events.. with your request as the last item.

800x422-P1100699.JPG.jpg749x600-P1100700.JPG.jpg

800x385-P1100701.JPG.jpg

800x439-P1100698.JPG.jpg

There is a "Long Winded" version of "how to install the latest WINE on Linux Mint 20.1  ( i.e. version 6.0 ) which I tried last evening ( lots of copy and pasting, and waiting ages for packages to be installed, etc etc) ... which took forever, and kept me up until almost 2.30 a.m. waiting for it to complete.. with the response to       wine --version    being... wine is not installed.  to install use sudo apt install wine .....

As I am only setting this up on a USB stick for "portability".. I do not need the latest version, so I thought I would try the Software manager... which reported  " not available".. then resorted to the "Package manager"  only for the above to happen ..

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@shutter  there's no point in installing any package on a 'live cd' , it will, be lost on the next reboot.

The first thing you need to do is create a 'persistent storage' live cd https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/03/create-persistent-storage-live-usb-with.html

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@MisterW Yes, I know that.... that is why I created a Persistent USB Cruzer Drive.   using    mkusb on a 32GB usb Cruzer Drive

sdc1   iso9660    1.9G

sdc2        vfat      3.9M

sdc3        vfat      USB DATA

Terminal output suggests you don't have networking enabled; if the system can't reach the Mint / Ubuntu repos it can't install from them (if wine & dependencies are on the "cdrom'' you'd probably need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list).

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@TheRoadCrew   OK>.. that may be the reason.. I had not "connected" to the internet ... will have another go.. and report back

cheers

Not using a CDROM.... using a 32GB cruzer blade usb stick... as previously mentioned above. !

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@MisterW  & @TheRoadCrew     I was connected to the net on the last pic.....

still connected..( excellent rock solid connection I have ) ...

just tried to do the "long winded version".... copy and paste to terminal....

all seemed to be running along at a fair rate of knots....  then after about 5 minutes of very fast moving terminal stuff... it ended... and there were "error" messages ...

here is the last part of it.....

( note... where I checked to see what version of wine was installed        wine --version...   )

You’ve run out of space on the drive - see the error “No space left on device”

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@dvorak    OK... but I  don`t understand what all that stuff means... hence my original query....

how come... on a NEW 32 GB usb stick... and a NEW install ( attempt ) of WINE on that, with no other stuff installed in between the two operations... I get a message saying  "you have broken packages" ...

and how come I have "run out of space"  ... I have done this set up before on a 16GB  usb stick, with no problems, ( earlier version of Mint. & Wine. )

Surely, a NEW install does not have "broken packages" from the repository or the software manager  ? ? ?

And... as queried... how do I fix those broken packages ? ? ? ? ?

I am now reformatting that USB stick and making a new "live" usb stick with a 10GB partition, hopefully that will solve the "No space left on the device"

WINE is the spawn of Satan - all who use it will rot in Hell for all eternity......

mint@mint:~$ lsb_release -d

That's on a non-persitsant USB drive - don't ask me to repeat it. Ever. 😅

Re: Broken ? ? ? ? ?

@TheRoadCrew  OK.. so you are going to do a runner now, then ! ! ! ...

I need the "persistence" on the USB stick, because I have a couple of small progs that I want to have available when the USB is "portable" to other laptops/computers.

As I said... I have done this before... and it was a simple job... I cannot understand how a new install can give "you have broken packages"..
