Hi, I've just dropped my 2 month old Iomega 500G external HD onto the "USB in" port and dislodged it from the caddy circuitboard. The HD still switches on and makes the normal noises but the computer does not reconogize it now. Can I buy a new usb caddy and fit the HD into it or could I unscrew the HD from the caddy and turn it into an internal HD.
Thanks for reading Del

Provided the drive itself is undamaged, either approach SHOULD be possible. The drive will be a standard SATA or PATA hard drive. Before ordering a new enclosure check which one it is. Same goes for installing it in your desktop. If its compatible, it should work.
Whether you really want to trust a hard drive that has been dropped that hard with valuable data is up to you.
You could check whether your household insurance covers it.

It will probably cost you less to replace than your insurance excess so not worth claining

If you have Spinrite or similar give the drive a major test before relying on it.
