It still uses USB drivers for the adapter! The whole point of using Ethernet is to get away from the CPU hogging USB connection and related drivers.
This is not something I would recommend using as you will be relying on the adapters USB driver to function properly with a likely untested set-up.
In any case you can get PCI network cards for under £5.

But would they know how to open the PC case?
The Sunday Times solution is probably suitable for someone who is afraid of slotting a card into their PC - especially because they would know nothing of anti-static precautions.

In all probability a PC without ethernet on the MOBO is likely to be a fairly old (slow?) PC - in which case using a USB to ethernet adapter is even more dubious advice
