Bootable Linux CD

For my sins it's ages since I ran Linux.
I used to find Knoppix handy - what's the current flavour that does bootable cd?

Re: Bootable Linux CD

99% of them offer live CD's (Boot to a usable environment from CD) Depends on what GDM you want use really, KDE or Gnome or XFCE (for lighter PC's less memory etc)

Re: Bootable Linux CD

Currently downloading Knoppix 6.2 iso so will see how that goes.
Long time now since I first installed Mandrake 6 - must be 11 years ago when I became a 64 year old newbie  Smiley

Re: Bootable Linux CD

I find Knoppix a bit hard going these days, it is great as a recovery system, just not as a normal desktop.

@Shutter I didn't feel the need to expand further than my sig  Cheesy
WRT the Debian version, looks good, but I have gotten into the habit (bad some may say) of using PPA's (I seem  to have about 10-15 of them in my sources list) and the Debian version doesn't support them. I have it running in a VM to have a play with though. (e.g. apt-add-repository doesn't work on the Debian version) So I would have to start searching for Debian sources and relying on the main repository.

Re: Bootable Linux CD

Ubuntu would be a standard - but you need at least 512 MB RAM.

Re: Bootable Linux CD

Or with 128Mb using DSL, but he didn't say what spec machine he was putting it on. As with most things more memory means a better UI, faster graphics cards same.
Dependant on what he wants to do with it, any of the versions listed here will probably do it.

Re: Bootable Linux CD

Machine is not mine will have  512mb DDR. It doesn't have an OS currently but need to check it out.
Thanks for all the thoughts, guys - I've actually found a 2004/5 Knoppix cd that'll probably cope with the machine spec - runs my old T41 Thinkpad without any problems.

Re: Bootable Linux CD

I was pleasantly surprised by Crunchbang, a Ubuntu/Debian derivative. Its nice and clean + quick to boot the Live CD.
So much so that its now my preferred system for my Linux desktop PC, and also my system of choice for hosting Zoneminder CCTV which has been running non-stop for nearly two years.
Alternatively if you'd like something quirky and cute, try Puppy, another system I'm happy with. Puppy is my memory stick live system of choice.. an older version I have runs from a 128MB stick Smiley
