Long time now since I first installed Mandrake 6 - must be 11 years ago when I became a 64 year old newbie

WRT the Debian version, looks good, but I have gotten into the habit (bad some may say) of using PPA's (I seem to have about 10-15 of them in my sources list) and the Debian version doesn't support them. I have it running in a VM to have a play with though. (e.g. apt-add-repository doesn't work on the Debian version) So I would have to start searching for Debian sources and relying on the main repository.

Dependant on what he wants to do with it, any of the versions listed here will probably do it.

Thanks for all the thoughts, guys - I've actually found a 2004/5 Knoppix cd that'll probably cope with the machine spec - runs my old T41 Thinkpad without any problems.

So much so that its now my preferred system for my Linux desktop PC, and also my system of choice for hosting Zoneminder CCTV which has been running non-stop for nearly two years.
Alternatively if you'd like something quirky and cute, try Puppy, another system I'm happy with. Puppy is my memory stick live system of choice.. an older version I have runs from a 128MB stick
