I recommend Linux Mint.
I've been using it for several years now and not switched to anything else.

Re: Best easy to use linux for laptop

I'd recommend giving this one a go (32 bit as I assume older Vista laptops won't 'need' 64 bit and 32 bit should be more compatible with some components):

You may also want to try this (for installing via USB), might be a bit quicker especially if you've a couple to do:

Re: Best easy to use linux for laptop

If you want one that looks like a mobile phone screen, Ubuntu is very good.
If you want one with a Windows-like menu, then a derivative of Ubuntu - "Mint" would suit.
Try to install a LTS (Long Term Release) version.

I can thoroughly recommend the much improved latest "Trusty Tahr" release v14.04 - http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop
If you don't get on with the Unity desktop, then try the Gnome desktop using the instructions here - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/04/ubuntu-14-04-classic-gnome-flashback-session
