Basic soundcard

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a cheap and cheerful soundcard?
All I want it for is to hear audio downloaded from interviews on sites such as BBC.
Anything good off ebay or somewhere else.

Re: Basic soundcard

Don't you have one on your motherboard?
If you feed it out to a couple of small active speakers it will be loud enough.

Re: Basic soundcard

Or you don't have the correct sound drivers loaded. Go to the mobo manufacturers website and download the sounds drivers and see if that gets you going.

How do I find out the make of the motherboard. Through Control Panel and System?

Re: Basic soundcard

Have a look at the BIOS information on startup - possibly go into the startup info (but don't change anything).
You probably have to hold the delete key (or similar) down to get into your configuration.
It should then reveal it's name and model  - or at least something cryptic that you can google for.

Re: Basic soundcard

Could be disabled in the BIOS.
There's a great piece of software here: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html that tells you everything you need to know about your PC, including motherboard manufacturer.  Wink

Re: Basic soundcard

There is nearly always someone on your local freecycle who's sitting on a stockpile of computer parts... Thats always my first port of call for anything I need.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
