I like the hosts file block approach and it works very well. The only down side to it is that it blocks things like tradedoubler which I get grief for from SWMBO when links she clicks don't work.
It's a shame that no one has ported http://adzapper.sourceforge.net/ to windows which I use with Squid to block ads and works really well.

Thanks all, especially paulh who suggested the hosts route, I hadn't considered that.
Now, with just two entries in hosts, the proliferation of banners on ebay has gone and it has made pages load a lot quicker.
For anyone else intersted the two entries I've made are......
127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 srx.uk.ebayrtm.com
... and (in XP at any rate) you will find the hosts file at c:\windows\system32\etc
