BT1800HG

How can I upgrade my router from WEP to higher security?Every time I try ,the wireless stops working.

You need to do the changes on the router using a wired connection.
Change from WEP to WPA , create the new password. Then on the wireless PC change the settings from WEP to WPA and input the new password.
Note :- what might be simpler is when changing the router from WEP to WPA , change the SSID as well. Then on the wireless PC , rescan for networks and it will see the new SSID and ask you to fill in the security details.

Sorry , it looks like the field is called 'Network Name' on the 1800HG.
If you havent got the manual you can download it from here http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/2Wire_1000_User_Guide.pdf
Page 27 ( or page 32 of the pdf ) shows the screen , its the same screen on which you are entering the Wireless security details. Curiously it does refer to it as SSID in the check box to enable SSID broadcast.
