Authentication on Plusnet SMTP server?

I use my laptop at home (which is on PlusNet) and at work (which isn't).
How can i set up my e-mail client to work at both locations.  Pop3 works but SMTP does not.
It did for a while because SMTP accepted authentication: it doesn't now.
I have had it running with Microsoft's SMTP service running locally on XP but that seems to be psychotic - i.e. deeply unfriendly and unstable.
And I would prefer not to use the webclient....
Any ideas?
Many thanks,
NOldrini

Re: Authentication on Plusnet SMTP server?

It is still possible but you must use your main username & password to authenticate with, not your mailbox login/pass.

PlusNet has been testing SMTP authentication, but this is not an `official` or `launched` service, so may be subject to removal at any time without notice.

Re: Authentication on Plusnet SMTP server?

I think I found this out by accident, it certainly works for me.  Wink
I'm a new PN customer awaiting Broadband transfer/activation and getting ready for the move. I set up my email account (in Outlook) as described and thought "I'm not going to be able to send PN emails until I'm on PN" so I tried a few authentication options and am now both sending & receiving PN emails whilst on another ISP.
I must say I wondered why there was no obvious information on this. Now I know.  Grin
BUT, what will happen to my other (3rd-party) email accounts hosted elsewhere that already use authentication for sending? You don't block these do you (my current ISP doesn't)? It would be a pain to have to reconfigure all my email accounts to send via the PN servers.  Sad
(or should I ask this in a new thread?)

PlusNet do not stop you using alternative SMTP servers.
