Are some file compression programs better than others?

Recently I tied to send a file to another chat room, as it happened a pps one, and the compressed file.(.zip) was a little in excess of the maximum permitted size for uploading.
Do any programs exist, preferably free, which will either generally or by request, compress to a greater extent than what I have, or is there a work around?
No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Hang around Lucerne, Yes Zip programs do vary in their efficiency, also with some you can split a file into two and send as two files then join up on expanding. I would have to dig out and find the best though.

Z-zip
High compression and ability to split an archive in to several parts.

Have you loaded 7-Zip?  when you run it if you and hover over the file tab in the top row there is an item spilt file, below that merge files.  that is how you split, send and the receive, merge.  is that OK Smiley

Loaded..yes! I used maximum compression to load to archive, then tried to split abd got operation not supported. Have I got my virtual knickers in a twist. I admit that I'm not the sharpest knife on computer matters.

Re: Are some file compression programs better than others?

You need 7-Zip to be displaying the contents of the directory containing the archive. Select the archive in that list and then try to split it. You can split previously created zip files (including those created by another program) using that method.
