Apple 4K TV issues

Just wanted to add my experiences of trying to get an Apple 4k TV to work on Plusnet.

System

  • Apple TV: Apple 4k TV 32Gb
  • Connection: WiFi
  • Router: 2704n router (2.4Ghz single band)
  • Broadband type: basic ADSL
  • Broadband speed: around 11Mbps

Issue

  • Apple TV regularly buffering or losing connection
  • Smart phones were getting 11Mbps through WiFi but Apple TV was getting 2Mbps

Failed solutions

  • Multiple changes to the configuration of the router including channels and router speeds
  • Switching on and off a variety of settings on the Apple TV
  • Changing the DNS service for the Apple TV
  • Resetting / restarting the Apple TV

Successful solution (for past few months)

  • Switching to a Plusnet Hub One router (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz dual band) and choosing 5Ghz band
  • Getting Plusnet to remove interference from the line

Hope this helps someone.

Re: Apple 4K TV issues

So your problem was nothing to do with Apple TV, just poor Hub Zero wireless performance. This review might interest you http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/plusnet/1403635/plusnet-hub-zero-2704n-review, especially this paragraph:

The router's 2.4GHz performance was lacklustre at best. With our test laptop’s built-in 802.11n wireless adaptor we saw speeds of just 3.9Mbit/s at 10m, dropping to a positively crawling 2Mbit/s at 25m. These are some of the worst speeds we’ve seen from any router.

What more can one say!

Re: Apple 4K TV issues

Do you have enough speed at 11 meg? Looking at the net, between 15 & 25 meg speeds are needed to sustain 4K streaming, if watching on a TV. This page suggests Apple requires 25 meg for streaming.

I read online that the newer Apple TVs prefer 5Ghz band so that may be the main reason. All other devices were fine on the WiFi.

Re: Apple 4K TV issues

To be fair, I haven't watched any 4k, only HD (which you need 8Mbps for), so yes, you would need faster broadband for that.

Re: Apple 4K TV issues

Talking of Apple TV there’s rumours going round of some kind of deal with BT/EE and Apple, with perhaps a free A tv for new sign ups.
