Any users of the new Mac Mini?

I’m looking to replace my existing iMac with a Mac Mini and I’m curious to know if anyone out there uses one and with your thoughts are on it and of course any issues you've encountered along the way.

I also need to buy monitors but 5K ones appear to very thin on the ground so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

I haven't got the new one (yet) but have had 3 of the previous generations and still have one running.
The RAM not (easily) user upgradable is probably the thing I don't like - you have to take it into an Apple Store.

But the number and type of ports is good and will be replace mine with one when it goes.

As for monitors I've not heard of a good 5k one, but that might change tonight Wink

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

Thanks for that @dvorak if you've had 3 of then I guess you're more than happy with them. I'm looking to get the i7, 1TB, 10Gbit Ethernet version and upgrade it to 64GB as this can now be done by the user.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

We've bought 2 at work to run the ProTools audio recording rigs. Went for the full hokey cokey 3.2GHz 6 core I7 with 64 GB ram. They may not be quite as powerful as the Mac Pro "wastebins", but for the price they are incredible.

Only possible down side so far is these ones can get quite hot when doing a lot of tracking with multiple plug-ins, so may need to keep an eye on reliability.

As is always the case with Apple, all the little adaptors needed are expensive.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

Would that be the dual processor Xeon or just the cheaper single processor?

Not at that price I don't, just as well I was sitting down where I read it.

Seems to be a new one, but only a single processor machine - however the thermals have been designed so that you can run it with all cores maxed out for long periods which mostly negates the need for dual cpu.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

I wonder what you'd need to do to drive that many cores flat out. I guess this is one for video transcoding and studio work.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

The demo'd a logic pro project with 1000 instruments playing and that was using about 60% and even rendering an 8k video dropping effects in on the fly wasn't maxing it out either.

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

Well having changed my mind yet again to this:
Mac.png
I order my new Mac and I’ve been informed that it’s been dispatched. So checked the UPS tracking only to find that it was in Shanghai, China!

I’m sure that when I bought the one I’m currently using it came from Ireland or am I losing the plot here?

Re: Any users of the new Mac Mini?

I think if it's a standard config - or before the time they soldered the components on and a the updates could be easily made then they ship from Ireland.
Anything different is built to order and shipped from China.

You planning to upgrade the RAM yourself?
