Anti Virus Program

At the moment I have the free version of Avast and at the moment it is trying to trick me on buying the full download even when I click to try to remove the download it still tries to download the only way to stop this is to go into windows task manager.I am thinking to get rid of this program I tried Advanced System care but that comes with these silly search engines and stupid games, can anyone recommend a free anti virus program something the does not slow your computer down on start up.

Re: Anti Virus Program

Avira is an alternative to Avast  I have used both... currently using Avast... not getting any problems with the upgrade/update  since the first initial attempts... Just ignore the "pop-up"...
You could uninstall avast -  go to the website - and re-download the latest version... proceed from there ...

I'll cast another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials.

Re: Anti Virus Program

All I would suggest is to look at these latest tests by very reputable testing organisations
http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php
http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/detection-test
http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-8/janfeb-2013/
I use Kaspersky which costs about £6 per year (I buy two 3 user licences)

Re: Anti Virus Program

hi I been using AVG now for over 10 years I got to say it one of the best plus very low memory usage so won't slow down your system
You can also get updates on most days so it not bad for free, it also got a link scanner so it tells you if the site is bad

Re: Anti Virus Program

Not according to jim`s first link...... AVG scores 95.3% with 0.4% compromise ,..... whereas AVAST scores 98.6% with nil compromised...
I was a great advocate of AVG from 3.5 to about 7, when it did start to slow down the startup and the scanning took forever... so I switched to AVAST... and hardly know it is working, except when the popup for the update tells me..!... also it has a link scanner too !...

That is my experience too.  The slow-down is very marked for older computer with less RAM; on a new machine you probably wouldn't notice anything.

Re: Anti Virus Program

The use of any AV program is down to personal preference , there are loads to try , i have tried most  Wink .
but it is no good to just rely on  one to do everything , its more of a combination, my own choice is ,MSE + Malwarebytes + Ccleaner
Asus ROG Hero Vii Z97 , Intel i5 4690k ,ROG Asus Strix 1070,
samsung 850evo 250gig , WD black 2 TB . Asus Phoebus sound ,
16 gig Avexir ram 2400 , water cooling Corsair H100i gtx ,
Corsair 750HXI Psu , Phanteks Enthoo pro case .

Re: Anti Virus Program

I agree with the above and I also use SpyBot 1.6.2 - not the latest incarnation.

So you must mean £6 per machine per year or £36 per year for your 6 licences?

Re: Anti Virus Program

I too like Kaspersky, but you only get it at £18 for a three-user licence by shopping around.  Renew directly with Kaspersky and I'm pretty sure it will cost a lot more.  The advertised price direct from the manufacturer  http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/internet-security?redef=1&reseller=DRPPC_BS ; is two pence short of £100 for six users, not £36.
