Acer Aspire 7720G

Hi all,
Is anyone using one of these laptops (Acer aspire 7720G) if you are could you tell me how to connect to my thomson router with a ethernet cable, i'm currently connected using wireless conection.
I have tried plugging the cable into #1 on the router & then into my laptop, but when i look on the thomson gateway page i'm not connected, are there some settings i should do for this to work, have never connected this way before.

Re: Acer Aspire 7720G

If you have connected a cable between your laptop and your router then you have done exactly the right thing and it should just work.  It is possible to fiddle with the settings of the network port on the computer so that it won't connect properly.  Could you have done that in the past with some other router?  Can you test the cable you are using by connecting something else with it?

Re: Acer Aspire 7720G

You haven't said what operating system you are using but have you checked that the network port is actually showing as OK in Control Panel, Device Manager.
Have you tried reinstalling the network drivers

Re: Acer Aspire 7720G

This tells you how to access the device manager http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsvista/ht/accessdmcpnva.htm
This is typically what you see when you click on Network Adapters - has it got a cross against it indicating a problem

Re: Acer Aspire 7720G

The one you want from that list is the 'Broadcom Netlink...' , that's the wired network interface.
Most of the WAN Miniport ones look like they are associated with VPN protocols.
You might want to check on the Broadcom adapter that the TCP/IP protocol is set to 'obtain an address automatically'
This http://www.home-network-help.com/configuring-ip.html might help.

Glad we got you going at last. I think Jim deserves most of the credit though, I just identified the right adapter from all the rubbish...

Re: Acer Aspire 7720G

Those other adaptors are normal for Vista and Windows 7 but normally only show up if you select the option in Device Manager to show hidden devices (found under View).
