AVG Upgrade

I'm using the free  AVG 9.0.862 anti-virus.  I'm getting messages asking me to upgrade to Anti Virus Free 2011.
Is this simply an update or is it a new version of the software?  If it's a new version is it worth using?

Re: AVG Upgrade

there installer for 2011, even if you say no installs the Yahoo tool bar and the bloated link scanner, but you can get rid of them after the install, the scan I did after install even found broken Digital signature on programs - thats on firefos, the added bits were on the addons bit and were easy to get rid of

Re: AVG Upgrade

Despite the garbled reply from Pierre_Pierre, "Anti Virus Free 2011" sounds like scamware to me [ or do you mean "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011"?].  For heavens sake don't install it unless you are completely sure it is bone fide.  Do the pop-ups only appear when you are using your web browser?  I'd try a scan with AVG if I were you!

Re: AVG Upgrade

Yes, AVG have a new product of a similar name.  It's the fact that the name that artmo quoted is not quite the same that made me suspicious.

Re: AVG Upgrade

@ Pierre..... Yes, I got that one too.... I just deleted it , before I read it.... !  thought that Adobe would show a popup if there was a new version rather than email me !...
on the AVG posting... I googled anti virus free 2011. and found this about 4 or 5 entries down....

The bottom line: Although AVG has flagged a little in the past few years, AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011 breathes some new life into one of the most popular security programs around with a shorter install, better usability, and faster scans.

so,..... there you have it !... (if you download it, of course... )

You can read it all on this page.. and get the download too !...

@ shutter, thanks for the info.  I'll have a look into it later.
@ReedRichards, that's the name that pops up offering me an upgrade.
I need to have a closer look at this once I get over my jet-lag Cool

Re: AVG Upgrade

Have done the download from CNET.... and it needs a re-boot... you can specify (along the way) not to install the yahoo toolbar and the "link scanner" before the full install.... it takes a bit of time and then you get the new icon on the desktop.... click on it, and you get the new improved interface.... click on the "computer scanner" and you get a link to download it, and use it once..... for free.... I did it, and it found 291 "errorrs" then offers a "once only free fix"... so go for it...  (AVG PC TUNE UP)  once running, it again takes some time.... probably because of the defrag section running... (it took 15 secs to fix 290 probs... and is still running now with the last one ! ! ! ... (20 minutes ! ! !).. while it is running, you can click on the "SYSTEM ADVISER" tab and see what it is actually doing...

EDIT    EDIT    EDIT
just finished the PC Tune up..... took 35 mins and 04 sec to repair ..

Re: AVG Upgrade

So is this an updated AVG as we know it or is it an attempt to sell us something to clean up the PC Undecided Undecided

Re: AVG Upgrade

It is a NEW version , of AVG FREE  With improved bits and pieces, and more of them.... You still have the option to PAY for more options as with the AVG 9.0 Free version...
So, it is (in theory) an UPGRADE.... but not as we know it..... (UPGRADE usually means PAY FOR version)... it is a "proper" UPDATE version... ! Cheesy
You can use the PC tool for 24 hours,  FREE  .... so do it.!  it is free.... then if you think you may want to use it again in the next year(s) you will need to pay for it...

Re: AVG Upgrade

Stopped using AVG in favour of Avast which seems to be superior in comparison. It also picked up several virus's which AVG had never detected. The AVG interface also says a lot. It looks old and in honesty doesn't have an advanced feel to it.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
