ASDL extension cable

an openreach engineer fitted a socket in my flat but because of coronavirus only put it just inside the window of the kitchen. The signal isn't strong enough to reach the TV in the sitting room. Could anybody let me know the correct cable to order from Amazon so that I can run an extension from the socket/microfilter in the kitchen to the router/TV in the sitting room to get catch up and Netflix during lockdown. they say they will come back when it's safe to do so and move the socket to the sitting room so it needs to be a temporary extension cable for a few months. Thank you

Re: ASDL extension cable

What you need is....

Hard Wire "twisted pair"...  not the flexible phone line extension type.

You will have to measure the distance and order sufficient plus a bit more if you think you may need it.

You will also need a Wall Socket  for your connection to your  router

The twisted pair consists of from 4 to 24 or more "twisted pairs" of hard wire ( copper   in theory  )

you need only ONE pair.....

the current Openreach wiring colour code with 2 twisted (CW1308 spec - loose twist) pairs (blue/orange and green/brown)

... ( they will be twisted together all along the cable .. so you know which one you are connecting

Open up the face plate that the engineer fixed.... attach the wires to connection 2 & 5    and do the same colours to the other end on the wall socket   ..  plug in the filter....  plug in the router and hopefully. you will be back online again.

Here is a link to a guide..... http://www.wppltd.demon.co.uk/WPP/Wiring/UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html

Cable ....  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BT-Manufactured-Solid-Copper-External-10m-2-Pair-CW1308-Black-Telephone-C...

Socket .....https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUSTIN-TAYLOR-WALL-MOUNTED-TELEPHONE-SOCKETS/123538924680?hash=item1cc37e...

The above socket uses "push down" connections for the wiring... you "could" use a small screwdriver, but there is a special tool

Special "idc" tool..... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Telecom-BT-Telephone-RJ45-Lan-Network-IDC-Cable-Insertion-Punch-Down-Tool...

Re: ASDL extension cable

I had a similar issue but a simpler solution: connect the filter to a long Cat6 ethernet cable and run the cable to to a low cost hub to which I connected all my devices.

Re: ASDL extension cable

@Carriewim Welcome to the forums. What you need is something like this. This will allow you to extend the connection from the phone socket to allow you to connect the router in your lounge.

Re: ASDL extension cable

Thank you for your detailed reply but I am hoping Openreach will come back after the lockdown ends and do exactly what you explain in your post to move the socket to the lounge.

Re: ASDL extension cable

@Carriewim - They should, in theory, but if I were you I'd remind them that it needs doing, as when things get back to 'normal' they will be quite busy and small jobs like this could easily slip off their radar.
