If you install a new o/s anything can happen but one of the main things is if you are running ntfs and there are permissions on directories then the new o/s wont recognize the sid of the old pc so it will get its knickers into a twist. You will need to take ownership of the directories in order to get at the files.

It will be fine to install a 32 bit or a 64 bit or even a 64 bit OS running a mixture of 32 bit and 64 bit components.
It will even handle a NTFS file system if you really want to.

I like XP Pro for this machine (for the time being) cos it is quick and really easy for file and printer sharing with my other (xp) machines.
I do eventually plan to switch all my machines to Linux but right now I need this computer back up and running ASAP and since I know XP inside out that is what is going back on.

Since I believe Windows now supports the ipp printing protocol, life might be a tiny bit easier - I haven't got a M$ PC to try it on anymore.

The only thing that gave me any grief at all, was the Radeon graphics card - and ATI's pathetic support for Linux is well-known. But last week I downloaded a dev release of the driver, and that's sorted it.
I've even mounted all my old NTFS drives - SCSI and IDE - without difficulty.
Now, all I need to do is switch to a package which means my weekly update check doesn't send me past my download limit for the month...
