500GB USB Drive format

I have a 500GB USB hard drive I need to format FAT32.
Windows 7 won't do it as it insists on NTFS.
I currently have it attached to a Linux Mint laptop and trying a FAT format.
The drive will be put into service as a PS3 backup destination.
Any suggestions please?

Re: 500GB USB Drive format

gparted in Linux Mint should do the job, but another option is to create a smaller partition.
You can create 2 partitions on the usb hard drive. make the first 32 Gb and format to fat 32 and use the rest of the disk as another partition in ntfs

Re: 500GB USB Drive format

I have created a PS3 backup on the drive before without partitioning it but today the PS3 backup procedure doesn't want to play ball.
I'll see what tomorrow brings.

#  mkdosfs -F 32 -I /dev/sdX1

Where X is whatever your disk appears as (sdb, sdc, or whatever)
That's what I use for formatting USB sticks with FAT32

If the command line doesn't float your boat try 'Disks'

Re: 500GB USB Drive format

I used FAT32 Format.exe, available thru' Google, to format a large HDD!

Re: 500GB USB Drive format

Update:
I have successfully formatted the USB drive to FAT32.
The PS3 backup procedure starts and announces that it will take approximately 2 hours and 59 minutes.
It then fails with an error code which varies.
The current one is 80010006 (problem accessing a file).
I had another go with a better quality USB cable and received this error code...800283E1 which Sony have no search result for.

Re: 500GB USB Drive format

Having read this which disturbed a few cobwebs in the old brain I disconnected the ethernet cable (Wi-Fi was disabled) and the backup is now running..currently 3%.
I dimly recall a backup issue long ago where removing the ethernet cable afforded a solution.....crazy.
2 hours 50 minutes to go....
