4K UHD

I keep browsing various site with a view to purchasing a 4K TV but the variety of specs make comparisons difficult.

A further complication is what to play a 4K Blu-ray on.

There appears to be 2 or 3 4K players on the market with prices upwards of £400.

An option seems to be a X-box One S which is half the price and includes a game (I'm a Playstation man).

I seem to recall one of the playstations being in a similar situation.

Any way I would appreciate comments and experiences from others.

Re: 4K UHD

Why don't you wait and get the new PlayStation Pro (I think that's what it's called) it's got 4K, that way you'd get the best value all round.

Re: 4K UHD

2 reasons unfortunately @Anonymous

1. I have only recently bought a PS4

2. The PS4 Pro does not have a 4K UHD drive.

Re: 4K UHD

Unless the screen is really big you probably won't see any difference at 4K.

On a 32" screen I'm pushed to notice any difference between SD and HD.

Re: 4K UHD

@Strat - That's a bummer, you'd have thought with the 4K support there would have been some way of playing 4K titles so you can justify the cost. Sad

Re: 4K UHD

The industry watchers consider Sony have missed a great opportunity and handed it to Microsoft.

I'm thinking the best option I have is to wait for big price drops with players as more come on stream.

Re: 4K UHD

Just as a point to note, this is what I'm up against

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5193400.htm#bv_qa

Argos describe this as a 4K Blu-ray Player but give it a 4K Blu-ray disc and it wouldn't know what to do with it.

It's a standard Blu-ray player with up-scaling facilities to 4K...not the same at all and probably misleading advertising.

This device is a genuine 4K Blu-ray player and there is a substantial price difference between it and the one above.

Re: 4K UHD

note that the 4k spec hasn't been finalised yet, so there is no agreed standard.
it might be worth waiting until the spec is finalised and agreed.

it's bit a like the "HD ready" and "Full HD" scam that happened when HD launched.

and then we have idiots like QVC selling 4K devices and saying they are 4 times better than HD 1080P. that's wrong as 1080P is 2K, so 4K is only 2 times better than 1080P. most of the shops are selling 4K badged items and not knowing what 4K actually is. and that's before you add the UHD badge that others use.

Re: 4K UHD

it's all based on the vertical pixel height though.
1080p (2k) being 1920x1080
2160p (4k) is 4096x2160
UHD technically is 3840x2160 though which is what consumer 4K apparently is

Re: 4K UHD

Blue-Ray/DVD/CD readers are quite cheap (£50) for PC desktops.

Since I only have a 27" monitor, I can get a decent HD view(?), but not a 4K "experience".

Re: 4K UHD

that's for blu-ray though.
the broadcast 4k standard hasn't been finalised.
so you could still end up with a tv that doesn't quite conform to broadcast 4k standard.

Re: 4K UHD

I can't imagine all the major TV manufacturers churning out millions of 4K TVs incapable of receiving 4K television transmissions as being tested by the BBC for example.
