2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Can I use my spare 2704n router to extend the wireless range?
If possible I would like router 2 to connect via wifi to router 1 (fibre config) so we can connect to router 2 on devices closer to it.
Thanks

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Hello, if you mean something like the black picture in this post: https://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,137629.msg1247479.html#msg1247479
Then you can probably try the firmware on this post: https://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,142874.0.html
but there is risk in changing firmwares....

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Hi Matty123123,
I downloaded the firmware and installed it on the spare router.  I can connect to 192.168.1.1 via lan, I clicked on Network/Wifi/Scan and connected to the other router.
Now what do I need to do so I can connect my laptop to the spare router I just updated via wifi to use the fibre connection from the main router?
Should I be able to see 2 wifi signals when I scan for wifi devices on my desktop or just 1?
Thanks

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

If you connect your computer via ethernet to the second router, it will communicate to your main router.

but by what you just wrote...   were you planning to use it as a wifi repeater.  e.g. your secondary/spare router talks to your laptop & the other router by wifi only?
if thats so...  I will need a little time to figure that out.

P.S. dont do a factory reset....

oh, my last post might not have made sense...
Which one of these pictures are you hoping for....
(repeater mode is really slow)

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Hi Matty,
Its the first image, repeater mode.  So I guess it will be no real advantage moving the second router closer to the laptop in repeater mode.
The problem we have is the main router is on the ground floor and when a few devices are connected there is some bottleneck somewhere even though the fibre is very fast.  We get almost 75MB DL / 19MB UL when connected via lan.

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

oh i see.....
to be honest, it might not help if you think there is a bottleneck in the wifi.
I've heard there is some new software (7.275.2_F2704N_Plusnet)  I dont have this software, but if you do - you can try to turn 40Mhz in the wifi mode.  You will need to get answers in other threads though.
However I'll respond probably tomorrow regarding the repeater mode (after a test).  Because it cant hurt to try it.

Yeah we have the new firmware (7.275.2_F2704N_Plusnet), I couldnt see 40mhz but there was an option for 300mbs so I chose that, Will test it.
Thanks

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

yes sorry I ment, 300mbs.
But there is another catch.  300mbs will automaticly move down to 144mbs/54mbs in a wireless noisy residential area.

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Sorry i failed, it maybe a software bug ?, anyway it will not speed up anything.
By the way, I have never connected above 54mbps in my house.  Then remove a third off that (overheads, errors & collisions).  So my best thoughput speed is ~35mbps.

Re: 2 x 2704n Routers, can I use 1 to extend the wifi range?

Yeah I failed too, I setup router 2 (spare) to be a wifi client connected to router 1 (fibre) then added another wifi as main but it came up saying both wifi connections were disconnected or unavailable or something.
I might just grab a couple of powerline adapters instead then get the full speed upstairs hopefully.
