If you are thinking of buying a 144hz monitor make sure you have good cooling, I just did a test after getting higher temps than my mate who has a 60hz monitor whilst playing Elite Dangerous, running similar systems.
My specs : 144hz monitor, 3770K @ 4.6, GTX 970 running stock speeds, fan speed @ 80 using MSI afterburner.
Playing at 120hz,
GFX temp 60, CPU temp across 8 cores mid to high 50's.
Playing at 85hz,
GFX temp 37, CPU temp mid to high 30's.
