New Ultra HD 1TB Youview+ box

BT have announced a new Youview+ box with 1TB of storage and it will support UltraHD broadcasts.
Is the Plusnet Youview+ box a bit outdated already? Any plans from Plusnet to offer this box?

Damn!
Oh, hang on, I only have an HD TV and no plans for upgrade at present, maybe I just saved a few hundred quid by getting the 'out of date' non-ultra box.
Would be nice to see PN offer this Youview+++ box in time but I  think they'll be getting their still new TV setup settled in 'as is' first.

You SEEN anything broadcast in Ultra (On FREEVIEW) ? I am with the others, I will not be upgrading my equipment for at least 6 years. (by which time we will probably have Ultra ++)
Face it the broadcast stuff is 1080i, a lot of the IPTV stuff is 720 at best. There is a LONG way to go before it is mainstream.

This box also has double the storage space of the current Youview+ box.

Double the HD size but less probably less hours at maximum definition.  Wink

For sure less hours at UHD quality, although it will depend on the streaming rate. It looks like this will be a multicast channel rather than one broadcast via satellite.

Re: New Ultra HD 1TB Youview+ box

Slightly misleading diagram as is uses pixel res and  "real" video is nyquist filtered.
The THX etc guides referenced WRT close viewing distances can be read as saying that it's good you can get that close without seeing sub pixel display related artifacts = immersive, not that you need to be that close to see full res (due to above).
As it's BT Sport that is using this the comparison will also be between interlaced and progressive = more res gain for UHD as it doesn't AFAIK "allow" interlaced any more.
Of course I don't know what BT are actually going to broadcast.
Another possible gain in temporal res = use 60fps rather than 50. No idea if they will, but the BBC did some work on UHD temporal res and theoretically you need (IIRC) something like 700fps to match the spatial res of UHD. 700 is a dream of course, but they did trial/view test 60 vs 120 and the difference was easily noticeable.  They did also accept that most modern TVs interpolate anyway - but pointed out that can and does cause artifacts.

Re: New Ultra HD 1TB Youview+ box

Worth noting that BT are launching their Ultra HD channel on August 2nd with
[Censored] v Chelsea in the FA Community Shield, closely followed by
the first Premiership match of the season, Man United v Tottenham on August 8th.
IF Plusnet were to match this with a new Ultra HD box, that would tempt me to go fibre.
[Edited to add] The censored team plays at the Emirates and are managed by Arsene Wenger!

If it was in the pipeline, it wouldn't be sorted by this date I'd imagine.

I completely derailed a recent post in a similar fashion recently.
To get back on track, I'll feed it back when I'm back in tomorrow.

Don't want to go grossly OT however watching 4k video on on retina 5k iMac is beautiful even compared to 1080p! You do notice a difference. Not as big a difference compared to going SD to HD but it is just that bit sharper and more real!
