Surprisingly not!  The BT Speedtester is notoriously inaccurate.
What results do you get from a 'normal' speedtest?

The media rumours that are being referred to are a demonstration of shocking journalism based on technical untruths from the BBC.
I personally don't believe that we're seeing more genuine speed complaints (barring recent Usenet issues) and I deal with them on a daily basis.

I think (this time) it's unfair to blame "shocking" journalism.
The story reads at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8172065.stm

Nearly one fifth of UK broadband customers on an eight Megabit per second (Mbps) connection actually receive less than 2Mbps, it found.
The research showed that less than 9% of users received more than 6Mbps.
However, the report shows that average connection speed across the UK is 4.1Mbps, up from 3.6Mbps in January.
A test like the one below can give you an indication of your current connection speed.....

Actually carrying out the suggested test gave a speed of 5.1Mbps - the PN speedtester gave a result of 5.3Mbps.
These results were obtained around teatime. Smiley

TBB Speed Test Slow Namesco Fast?
[link to this post]
I have noticed that over the past couple of months some of my results from the Think Broadband speed test have been exceptionally slow way less than 100kb/s.Normally they vary between 2-5 Mb/s depending on contention.
Immediately using the Namesco speed test at http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ always shows the speed to be in the normal 2-5Mb/s range.
I have also confirmed these speeds by the speed of downloads and on demand video which always works fine even when the TBB speed tester is really slow.
My conclusion is that there is an intermittent bottleneck between TBB and Demon. What seems strange is that it's either ok i.e. speeds fom other sites agree with TBB or TBB is way way below the rest.
Has any one else noticed a similar effect from Demon or any other providers.

Speed Test Results
Date 30/07/09 17:22:06
Speed Down 5828.87 Kbps ( 5.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 376.18 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095

If that's the case then why am I wasting my time providing three BT tests for CS?

Re: Volume of complaints re: slow speed

Because BTW wont accept a fault without them.
The Synch speed is OK, the Profile is OK, but the throughput is all over the place

Re: Volume of complaints re: slow speed

Speaking as an ex-demonite, you must expect Demon to be slow.
The Indian call centre didn't have any connection with BT outreach, so
it was impossible to progress a fault.
This is why foreign call centres are a bad thing.

Re: Volume of complaints re: slow speed

well heres my speed test results to which im happy with, however when downloading between 12pm-12am the downloading speed is rather slow not sure if its a plusnet fault or wherever it is i am downloading from, since moving to plusnet i have seen fantastic support either on a phone call or on the forums, thers always someone there to help me out to which im really gratefull, before moving to plusnet i was with tiscali where customer service is appaulling and there nature of reporting a speed fault is very very confusing,i was geting a MAX of 1mbps for the whole year i was with them and trying to get help to resolve my issue was so dire and confusing i just gave up and counted the days my contract would end so i could move to a better service for my money to which i believe i have, tiscali sent me a letter saying sorry to see you go!! as for me,its the best move i ever made.

@Steve74
it depends on what package you are on and what you are trying to do as some things are capped, see below for Value and Unlimited (as to how much not speed)

Gosh....does 6mb download actually exist?  Cheesy I could watch a streaming video without it forever pausing whilst buffering.
