Also
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_bead
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_(iron)
also explains more.
It is a way to increase the inducuctance of coil of wire ( inductor ) - if you've ever opened up an older medium wave radio - you will see the ferrite rod antenna with coiuls of wire around it.

Re: Unresolved support ticket open for more than six months - is this a record?

Thanks for all the comments, guys - I'll look at these this evening.
PN support have now told me that BT's Complex Faults Team has not in fact been engaged and that the CFT won't accept the fault until BT engineers have addressed all the following issues:-
Quote
* D-side (Distribution) cabling pair changed / replaced
* E-side (Exchange) cabling pair changed / replaced
* Tie Pair Modify
* Lift and Shift
* All improvements possible made to the wiring entering your premises (RF3 filter, SSFP, etc)

To my knowledge, BT have only done the tie pair mod, fitted an RF3 filter and a new SSFP. I've agreed to another engineer visit next week, but I'm fully expecting that they'll only tick off one of these items at a time (due to the 2h limit) and it will take another 3 or 4 visits (at least) before CFT will get involved.
And the note about "All improvements possible made to the wiring entering your premises (RF3 filter, SSFP, etc)" just reinforces the points that @anotherone (and others) have been making about replacing the dodgy cable running to the RF3 filter, and also replacing the drop cable etc.
Can one of the PN guys who monitor this forum chase this up for me, please, as I'm really concerned that BT has been seriously wasting everyone's time i.e. you would have thought that, after 7 or 8 visits, at least most of these improvements would have been made by now. I'm getting a bit angry now, so time to walk round the block I think  Angry

That might not sound like progress, but it is in fact.
It's a list of things that BT acknowledge (may) need to be addressed, so it's a target to be aimed for.
But, you're right, they will probably do them one at a time. I certainly would, it's standard practise when investigating a problem and assists with identifying the cause. Wink

2 steps forward, 1 back, at least there's a list!

True, but it would have been nice to have seen the list a few months ago i.e. why does it take 7 or 8 visits to tick off 3 items from the list? Still a bit annoyed, but at least the sun's shining  Smiley

Hi Catweazle,
I've had a look at the ticket for you and will nudge the faults team so we can either get the remnants of that list sorted (or another engineer visit booked, if that is what is deemed required). Sorry for the continuing hassle, but I'm glad things are moving for you.

Re: Unresolved support ticket open for more than six months - is this a record?

Thanks, orbrey - I've not heard anything from PN support since this morning, though.
Sync rate was just 160kbps (with a 15Db noise margin) when I returned from work, so I rebooted the router. This didn't help much as the sync rate increased to just 192kbps (noise margin remained at 15Db, so I guess that's the new target). The DMT graph has loads of gaps  Sad
I tried using the AM radio to try to find interference sources (as @anotherone suggested earlier) and found various degrees of buzzing at the following (approximate) frequencies 520, 600, 650, 710, 790 (this one sounds more like very rapid morse code), 990. I'll check again (probably tomorrow) when (if) the sync rate improves appreciably i.e. to see whether the buzzing is still present at those frequencies.

Good grief, that's gone really bad.
Surely with that evidence PN can get BT moving into 2nd gear.  Shocked

Have you noticed that those gaps are mostly about 60KHz apart?

That's unbelievably bad. Or, in the circumstances, unbelievably good... Surely a graph like that has got to make *someone* at BT take notice? Maybe even do more than one fix at a time.

Did you use a digital-tuning AM radio? When I used an old manual tuner, I found it hard to distinguish between any particular noises.
Anyway, if you're actually getting some noticeable noise out of the radio, then I'd also suggest recording it. More evidence that BT will find hard to ignore...

Out of interest - the morse signal at 790 - is it a repeated signal or does it actually sound like morse code?

Re: Unresolved support ticket open for more than six months - is this a record?

Could you even record the sound from the radio onto the computer, so you could upload a sample to this thread for everyone here to listen to? Someone might recognise the sound and help find the culprit quicker!
Ideally, you would record each frequency into it's own clip, labelled with the frequency. I think this could finally be the evidence needed to pin point the problem... (hopefully!)
You would need to upload the sound to some webspace and link to it, as sound files can't be attached to posts directly....

What if there is someone trapped in the exchange and sending morse code in an attempt to be rescued?
I suggest that 5 of us meet in the garden shed to discuss what we do next, whilst drinking lashings of ginger beer!
