How about introducing a system for giving members a copy of the phone book

Our WLR3 provider has confirmed that we cannot order phone books via BT Openreach, with whom we place orders for telephone lines. To the best of my understanding, we are under no obligation to provide a free telephone book and our customers are free to order directly from BT, As such, we are not in breach of Ofcom GC 8.2*
*I'm not a lawyer, this is just my interpretation!

I don't think our customers are delivered a telephone directory by default, regardless of length of tenure.
My WLR has been active for over 2 years and I haven't received a directory in that time.

I can't imagine that Plusnet will lose many customers over their failure to supply FREE Phone directories to their customers... but they have lost me. After my 12 month contract has expired I will be moving my phone service back to BT.

It's not only that. I personally wonder what else Plusnet have dumbed down to save a few pennies... If they can't even supply my local phone book for FREE then perhaps my SLA in the event of a fault is slightly less than it was with BT... There seems to be an awful lot more small print than I'd imagined. I've just lost the confidence that I've bought the right product.

I'm actually considering switching phone line when the time comes to PN - hopefully in the aim that I'll stop receiving the waste of paper that is the phone book.  Trying to do this any other way appeasr to be nearly impossible.
I'm just wondering who is actually paying for them to be produced - particularly the "Phone Book" as that always used to be more residential names/numbers than businesses.  If the cost of this is passed onto phone providers then reducing the number of them is definitely a good thing as the cost savings can be spent on improving the service.
If anybody wants to contact me; they need to know my number already.  I'm not, never have been, and never will be, in the Phone Book.

joining plus.net won't necessarily stop you getting a phone book, I have had my phone provision from plus.net for quite a while now and still regularly get phone books (which go straight in the re-cycling bin)

You can cancel receiving a phone book if you want, but as Plusnet don't seem to have a mechanism (nor be interested in providing one) probably contact BT at the same place as you would order one. Likewise if you don't want a Yellow pages or Thomson - contact them.

I'm wondering if receiving a phone book is tied to whether you are an ex-directory customer or not? I've always been ex-directory and all our new customers are ex-directory but older customers may not be.

Don't think so - I was ex-directory with BT, ceased my line and ported my number to Sipgate in February 2011 and I still had a phone book delivered a month or so ago.
I don't recall it being actually addressed to me.  I think most/all addresses in an area have one delivered when the main print run is done for an updated edition, but perhaps my memory is poor and it was addressed.  If that's the case, it can only be that I used to be a BT customer.

I'd always assumed everyone got one like the Thompson and yellow pages, as before signing up with PN  i'd been with LLU providers for years and my neighbour has never had a land line, yet two phone books are always left at the main entrance to our flats.
And they're definitely not addressed.
I'd rather not get them, along with the YP and Thompson to be honest, it's a waste of resources and go straight in the recycling.
