Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

Linux traceroute will send UDP packets by default, which some servers may not respond to. Windows tracert sends ICMP packets, some servers may not respond to that either.
Run traceroute -I or traceroute -T instead.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

Thanks ejs.
However I am now encountering high ping times again.
Overall it's been better since I been moved over to a static IP but I am still getting spikes now and then as my graph shows.

High ping times once again. Packet Loss.

Seriously what the hell is going on with my line? -- Who can I contact to get this fixed.
Mods: Sorry for the double post. But I am getting fed up with being ignored.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

I think this is a fault.

You're seeing the high pings starting between your modem and our first hop.  This means either the gateway is struggling (which it isn't as we'd see a much larger number of problems!) or the problem is somewhere from your modem, through your line, exchange and back haul to us.  More than likely it's your line!
Can you go to http://faults.plus.net and raise a fault for us to investigate.  You started one back in September, but didn't complete all the questions so it closed off a few days later Sad
I don't supposed you've got a spare router handy so you can prove it isn't your router?  (Sorry if you've mentioned that in the thread already)

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

It might also be worth trying the quiet line test (dial 17070 and chose option 2) to see if there is any noise/static on the line.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

@Kelly,
I've tried two different routers.
My Billion 7000n and my own router with an ADSL card. Both give me high latency.
I think its more a gateway issue then a router issue. So far I've had more trouble using -ag02.plus.net. but when I was on ag08.plus.net everything was wonderful.
I've never had any problems with any other providers (such as BT, and Be*)
If I reboot the router I have perfect pings (22ms or lower) for around five minutes and then it just spikes like so.
I skipped the faults.plus.net because I don't want to be asked "have you tried turning your router on and off again".
However I will raise a ticket.
@AndyH
I have a BT line and confirm that that there is no noise/static on the line.

Good. Will be a fault then.

You need to supply the PCL/PTW in front of the gateway addresses for us to know which you are referring.  It's always possible that we have a hardware issue, but it would be affecting a lot of customer if so.

Who were you with before you came to is?  BT or BE?  If it was BE, it could be a knock on from moving from their LLU product.

Please fill it in and answer them all.  It start the whole process off and makes sure that the simple things (checking with a new router, making sure you've microfilters on all phones/sky boxes are covered).  It shouldn't take long at all, and will save a bounce back to you.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

I've encountered high loss on the following routes:
ptw-ag02.plus.net
ptw-ag04.plus.net
ptw-ag06.plus.net
ptw-ag08 was pretty reasonable.
I was rebooting my router to change the route path.
I've now created a support ticket and my previous provider was Be* back in July.
Thanks you for your help.

Don't!
Frequent reboots may be seen by the DLM in the exchange as instability and it will slow your speeds in an attempt to stabilise the line.
Go in to the router interface and click Disconnect then Connect. That drops the PPP session without dropping sync with the exchange. It will (usually - unless you get unlucky) connect you to a different gateway.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

Sorry Jelv,
That's what I mean by "reboot" not actually reboot the router, I should of really written "Disconnect" -- My mistake.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

You're not doing anything which might trigger a high volume of incoming connections by any chance ? P2P or server hosting ?
Totally a stab in the dark but when a home hosted website got a little too popular a few years ago I had very similar issues with intermittent high latency issues and ping times through the roof.

Picbits,
Apart from an odd P2P Game (Borderlands) no other services are being ran.

Re: Fed up with ping times from Hell

Raised ticket, had response stating some "automatic setting" would be changed Monday.
No reply to ticket since then.. and still sucky broadband.
Sorry for double posting. But I've done everything from the handbook down to the forum. If this is an unfixable problem please just say and I'll move elsewhere.
