Re: Some sites load, others don't and show ERR-NAME-RESOLUTION-FAILED

As well as setting DNS server on the router to Google's at 8.8.4.4, I had to do this:
ipconfig /renew
- Things are a bit better.

4. DNS server - tick in the box and select "use the following DNS server addresses". First line 8.8.8.8 and second line 8.8.4.4

It might be more robust not to set both options to point at Google's DNS servers.  I use the IP address of my router (which is typically 192.168.1.254 for a Plusnet router) as the first choice and Google's 8.8.8.8 (or 8.8.8.4) as second.

+creamola thanks for the DNS tip, would be OK but that download link is one I can not access either.
Time to do it manually then lol

Re: Some sites load, others don't and show ERR-NAME-RESOLUTION-FAILED

Setting each PC's DNS to 8.8.8.8 works a treat. Thanks for people who have suggested it.
Would faulty DNS server prevent affected sites from even being pinged by their IP address? I can imagine that DNS failure would prevent you being able to ping www.bbc.co.uk by name but would it also prevent pinging 212.58.246.55 - I get no response.
Looks like the problems are bigger than just DNS - they've got a major network routing problem.

I first noticed problems at 00:30 this morning.  Was able to finish off what I needed to do via a 3G connection

It's a DNS issue - PlusNet's DNS servers are borked - but Googles' work fine.
1. Download netsetman ...
5. Click "Activate" top right.
This will locally (i.e. on just your PC only) set your DNS to Google.
Obviously, reverse this out one Plusnet have fixed the problem.

Isn't it easier just to set the DNS on the main router to point to Google?
Unless I'm missing something here, your home devices ask your router for DNS, your router asks Plusnet for DNS.
By setting it (and leaving it!) pointing to Google on the router, you'll instantly fix ALL your devices AND in the future enjoy the massively quicker response from Google's DNS.
It working for me, anyway. Seems far simpler than messing with each one at a time.

Do you have a new Sagemcom router? If so, just go to http://192.168.1.254/advanced_dns.html, login, and select Google from the list.
Or, for each PC: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/fl/change-dns-servers-windows-8.htm

Re: Some sites load, others don't and show ERR-NAME-RESOLUTION-FAILED

Same problem here. Have also changed DNS severs to Google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 as a temporary "fix".
Amazing that an organisation the size of BT/Plusnet can have such poor infrastucture resiliance that causes such widespread failure of an essential service like DNS.

Re: DNS servers failing

Certainly doesn't. Wonder how Plusnet will compensate for loss of service.

Switching to Google's dns helps but doesnt resolve the problem. Still cant access sites like my.yahoo.com, forum.xda-developers.com, reissued.com
